Retired Deputy murdered in Florida

Featured Replies

Bill Myers was a retired deputy who had taken a part time job at the department serving papers to help pay for a family trip. He was serving papers to Joel Dixon Smith and while he was walking with Smith to retrieve his weapons Smith fatally shot Myers. Smith fled to a hotel where he met his demise when he charged at the police with a weapon in his hand.

Heard about this yesterday. Was essentially an execution. All so the guy could basically commit suicide by cop a few hours later.

Just shows there is no safe job in LE, even serving papers

Yep, and why no constables should be allowed.

I'm not saying I disagree, I know you're very passionate about recognizing how the position of constable is very outdated. I'm just not sure why you're mentioning it in this thread???

Just so senseless and unnecessary. What the hell is wrong with people?

Yet people try to tell me we aren't a more violent society today.

The stats say we aren't.

In the other thread where it was brought up, one of the points of discussion is that constables could be/are sometimes used in the process of serving papers. I was simply affirming JD's statement about no job in law enforcement being safe.

Perfect example of how the most dangerous times for an officer usually involve being at someone's residence vs a shootout in a bank robbery or drug raid.

Did I miss Hannity et al commenting on the "war on police?"

I agree for the most part, however some are much more qualified than others. There are many in this state that aren't fit to wear a badge much less carry a gun. While there are actually many that are really good at what they do.

One local one in this county has more drug and DUI arrest than many officers, of course he's not having to answer calls and can do nothing but look for DUI's.

As Clyde said anytime an officer is on someone's property there is an inherent heightened sense of danger. Throw in the emotions involved with a domestic issue and you quickly see why Domestics are the most dangerous calls for Law Enforcement on a day in and day out basis.
