Huge High School Football Stadiums

Featured Replies

I see quite a few school districts have multiple teams sharing a stadium. This is an interesting concept and I immediately think about fans tailgating.

Imagine if JCPS did this having 3 or 4 regional stadiums with each hosting 2 games Friday and 2 games Saturday. I see this as a great way to build up community / small business involvement in High School Athletics.

LOVE Jones Stadium in El Paso.

That's one of the two that jumped out at me as well.

JCPS probably wouldn't work with such a large metro city... but think about:

Warren County (Bowling Green, Warren East, Warren Central, South Warren, Greenwood)

Owensboro (Owensboro, Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro Catholic)

Pike County (Belfry, Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Pike Central, East Ridge, Phelps)

The only issue you have though is how the tax structure is worked out... most of those Texas "Super Stadiums" are Independent School Districts and not County Districts where they are pulling from a single tax base and not different bases.

They used to do it during the playoffs at Old Cardinal. They'd have doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday nights. It was awesome.

I watched a game there a few years ago. There were five division one players on the field that night. The thing I found to be amazing was the structure of the stadium. You could not go from one side of the field to the other. A fence divided the seating sections.

I remember.

Allen Eagle Stadium is the one that cost 60 million and had cracks in the foundation right after it opened.

FWIW, my understanding is that, in high heat/humidity, this is a pretty common occurrence, and that the stadium was still structurally safe. The $60 million pricetag is big, but it was part of a $120 million bond issue approved by local voters - and it also built a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Auditorium and Academic Services space. The stadium itself also has spaces for baseball/softball, wrestling, golf, band, & cheerleaders.

I was just at Cincinnati Elder a few weeks ago, and it seats around 10,000 in a bowl shape. Was as impressive of a high school stadium as I've seen!!
