How far down could you appeal in class size?

Featured Replies

It's not a frequent conversation but every year or so during the Eas Carter vs West Carter game week someone suggests the consolidate the schools topic in Carter County. I don't think it will very likely happen in the next few years or ever honestly but if it did I was thinking about the number of enrollment between the two combined. East is 4A under the new realignment, and West was supposed to be 2A under the new realignment but appealed to be 3A because they would be driving an hour or so away for district games while there's numerous 3A teams in this area. If combined I'm almost positive the school would have the enrollment of a 6A school, but the problem with that is that there's not a 6A school in the area or even close to the area. If the school were to appeal to the KHSAA, is it likely they would be able to become a 4A school from 6A? There's many 4A schools in the area but I don't know if the KHSAA would allow that.

You can't appeal to play down in class, only up, so they would be stuck with 6A in your example.

Okay thank you!

I'm pretty sure there are some that moved down as others moved up

Yes, you are right, but they didn't petition to move down. Teams could not elect to move down on their own accord, rather moving down was a result of other teams moving up and creating a space, for lack of a better word.

In an attempt to keep class sizes stable, if one team elected to move up in class, the smallest team (male enrollment) in the higher class was given the option to move down to the lower class. If they declined, then the next smallest was given the option, etc.

It does present a pretty neat idea. If there was a way to develop a formula (past success, past roster sizes, etc.) that showed a school struggling significantly it would be nice if they could move down. I'm thinking of McCreary Central, a school that has had little to no success in football, but are mid- to big-3A. Perhaps they would qualify for 2A over even 1A because of the formula and could build up their program that way.

I say all of this knowing that it would be next to impossible to do. I'm not even sure anyone would want it. But it might give some hope to long-suffering programs.

We have some teams in Georgia that were placed in a lower class because there were no other 6a teams within an hours drive. They do play 6a football though and are usually pretty good at it.

I Can think of one instance where a 5-A team was allowed to play in 3-A. I think it was the 2006 season when two schools merged together to become Mercer County. That was a big topic on here when it was happening. The merger did not happen overnight but was in the plan for several years. Mercer went on to win the state title in 3-A for 2006.

Now that would be equal to have had Raceland 1-A and 3-A Russell combine for the 2015 season and play in 3-A. I would say that this combination would produce a very good team. I did not think it was fair in 2006 and I would not think it would be fair in 2015. I still have not heard of a good reason for the 2006 merger and still playing in 3-A. They had several years to work on scheduling. I think that the only other good reason for playing down would be a new program getting started.

Watusi should remember this.

I remember this. I also remember the Mercer fans saying they were going to own 5A going forward. Funny how things work out.
