NKY MLB Players

Featured Replies

Few possible names:

Jack Johnson - Dixie??? Know he played minors just not sure he made it to mlb

Luke Maile - CCH (in due time) have not heard anything about him lately.

Glazer - highlands??

It was Jay Johnson from Dixie and he never made it to the MLB. In 2008 he started the season with AA Portland. A few weeks into the season, he rounded first on his way to second for what should've been a stand up double. Instead, when he hit first, he blew his Achilles.

The next year (2009) Jay played for the Florence Freedom in his final year playing baseball.

Eric Glaser was a 2nd round pick by the BoSox but never made it to MLB. Pitched 3 games at AAA.

I believe he is married and living in Boston.

I'm struggling to think of any other players.

I think Chris Curley (Beechwood, I'll guess '05 or '06) is still in the minor leagues.

There are several from Lexington, but that wouldn't qualify (i.e. Ben Revere).

Revere has turned into a great player. Should have a good career. You also have Robbie Ross and Colin Cowgil as well. Robbie has pitched a lot so far for the Sox this year, and I think anyone that ever watched Cowgil play knew he wasn't going to stop until he made it. They are great ambassadors for the state, even though I think Revere claims to be from somewhere else too. I think he only was at Lexington Catholic for a couple years? He originally is from Georgia I think.

I could have sworn I saw Eric Glaser at a day care in Fort Thomas a few weeks ago.

Could be. My info is from a couple of years ago. Maybe he and his bride moved back here.

Curious to hear if anyone knows for sure if he is back in town or not.

Checked with a buddy of his. He's back in the area.

Tidbit on Luebbers. He threw for St Henry back in 88' and I remember he could bring the gas. We actually beat him at the Bellevue Vets my Jr yr, his Sr. 4-1 and Nick Berkley outdueled him. I also remember when he made his MLB debut for the Reds. I was in Hilton Head on vacation and he threw against the Cubs in a day game at Wrigley. I remember watching it on WGN.

He also hurt his arm and was not planning on playing baseball after high school. He only tried out as a walk on for UK because his roommate was doing so. He told me he had to borrow a glove for tryouts. I guess the rest is history. I used to work with him and would text him when I noticed that ESPN classic was airing a game that he is famous (Infamous) for. He was the starter for Mark Whiten's MLB record 12 rbi game in 1993. Larry is a pretty good guy and good humored about it.:lol2:

Josh Lueke from Scott High School. He would've graduated in '03 or '04. Went to St. Catharine's College in KY, too.

Josh Lueke now plays in the Mexican League. No longer affiliated with any Major League team.

Just wondering... But will Luke Maile become the first Cov Cath player to play a game in the majors? I saw a story about an old guy that got called up, but never got in, and I've heard about minor leaguers, but I didn't know about the big leagues.

I'd guess he or Zack Isler will be the 1st.

Todd Etler came close.

Here is a list of Covington Catholic graduates that got drafted. To my knowledge, none of these players ever made it to the major leagues. I know Muck never played professionally, but can't speak to all the rest.

Covington Catholic HS Baseball Players | Baseball-Reference.com

1. Todd Etler

2. John Frilling

3. Tim Grogan

4. David Hellman

5. Zach Isler

6. Luke Maile

7. Eugene Martin

8. Stephen Muck

9. James Nageleisen

I've never heard of John Frilling, but he must've been a big-time player. Drafted in the 16th round out of CCH, then selected in the 7th round a year later out of college.
