July 30, 201511 yr 12 Abortions per 1000 women in the US...that is a ton of babies being thrown in the trash or sold on the tissue market.
July 30, 201511 yr It's extremely hard for me to understand how some people think it shouldn't be a woman's choice about whether or not to keep a pregnancy. It baffles me to be completely honest.
July 30, 201511 yr It's extremely hard for me to understand how some people think it shouldn't be a woman's choice about whether or not to keep a pregnancy. It baffles me to be completely honest. It's all about when the fetus is a person. For those who feel it's at conception, abortion at any time is deemed wrong. For those that feel it's after the 1st trimester, abortion after 3-4 months is deemed wrong. I don't know a single person who feels abortion is okay right up until birth. The reason for that seems to be because everyone believes there is a point that the unborn child is an actual person before they are actually born.

I've always been of the belief that anything up to the conclusion of the first trimester is acceptable for an abortion. Anything after that isn't.
July 30, 201511 yr I've always been of the belief that anything up to the conclusion of the first trimester is acceptable for an abortion. Anything after that isn't. And that's the crux of the issue. There is a large portion of the population that believes life begins at conception. To them, the same thought-process you use to determine the 1st trimester as the cut-off, they use to say right away is the cut-off. I'm not sure I know where I fall on the when life begins topic. I just know I don't think the government should be involved.
July 30, 201511 yr Should the father have a say? Different topic probably for a different thread, but I say yes. As soon as a woman can get pregnant without the help of a guy, I'll concede that the choice should be solely hers. Until then, I think both should have a say.
July 30, 201511 yr For those that say it should be illegal I'll ask what I always ask: What should be the punishment? I think abortion should be illegal except in the case where the life of the mother is surely at stake. I do not have any interest in onerously punishing a woman for having an abortion although I think there needs to be something that may act as a deterrent. The pre-born baby needs to be protected. Can anyone tell us what the punishment was prior to Roe v Wade? We often act like this would be a new situation but it existed prior to Roe v Wade. My understanding is that laws pre-Roe v Wade targeted the abortionists and not the women. The women were treated as a second victim. I saw one article that talked about Texas laws prior to Roe v Wade and the penalty was 2-5 years in prison for those who aided or performed the abortion but the article didn't mention the women. My point is, for those of us who think it should be illegal, I think the starting point for a discussion concerning punishment would be to ask what was done before. Perhaps what the law was then was reasonable or maybe it would need some modification.
July 30, 201511 yr Should the father have a say? Of course, but ultimately it is the mother's decision.
July 30, 201511 yr I'll say it again. Whatever punishment you make for aborting a fetus, if illegal, it is unenforceable. There is literally no way to prosecute the crime.
July 30, 201511 yr According to the CDC, in 2009, girls age 15 - 19 accounted for 15.5% of abortions performed. Women aged 20 - 24 accounted for 32.7% of abortions performed. That's 48.2%, almost half, where the father is either under age as well or probably a young guy who's not ready for a kid either. In the other 51.8%, I'd say maybe the father is able to have a voice. In the end though, I still believe it's my choice. The real problem isn't abortion. It's getting to those adolescents and young men and women who are having sex in the first place.

Explain why it can't be prosecuted. Doctors could lose their license to practice medicine for their lifetime and be put in prison for a period of time. I think this was done pre Roe v Wade
July 30, 201511 yr Have you guys read the Declaration of Independence recently? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Those words are in that order for a reason.
