3A most open class with the new alignment?

Featured Replies

Class 3A

District 1 – Caldwell County, Fort Campbell, Paducah Tilghman, Trigg County, Union County

District 2 – Adair County, Edmonson County, Elizabethtown, Hart County, LaRue County

District 3 – Bardstown, Central, Henry County, Moore, Thomas Nelson, Waggener

District 4 – Boyle County, Garrard County, Lexington Catholic, Western Hills

District 5 – Bath County, Fleming County, Lewis County, Pendleton County, Russell, West Carter

District 6 – Belfry, Lawrence County, Pike County Central, Sheldon Clark

District 7 – Breathitt County, Estill County, Knott County Central, Magoffin County, Morgan County, Powell County

District 8 – Bell County, Casey County, Corbin, Jackson County, McCreary Central

Does the new alignment favor any 3A school, who looks to be in the best position to take advantage of this over the next four years?

I think life suddenly got a lot tougher for Central with Boyle and Lexington Catholic coming over to 3A and sitting in the west with them.

In terms of easiest path to a region title it is Belfry. They should be in the semis easily for the next 4 years.

Other than Belfry, E'Town has the least amount of challenges for a district title with Lou. Central close behind.

It was most favorable to Bell County and Corbin.

Neither team have advanced beyond the Regional Finals since the previous alignment.. most of that being due to Central. The Bobcats and Redhounds now also draw a lucky straw in that Breathitt County's District is probably the weakest in all of 3A and the Breathitt Bobcats are in the midst of one of their biggest talent pool slump in decades.

Paducah Tilghman also has, from a surface view at least, a pretty clear path to the Semi's. No more South Warren or Monroe County. I personally think Etown is going to put together a quality program under Coach Brown (former John Hardin HC).. but from just comparing resumes from the past 3 or 4 years Tilghman should breeze through their region with their talent alone.

Teams who were done no favors:

- Russell now is moved into Belfry's Region.

- Central traded a region with Corbin and Bell for a region with Boyle and LexCath.

- The hardest deal of all is Garrard County. Golden Lions trade a pretty conducive region for adding Central, Etown, and having to share a District with Boyle and LexCath. Not sure anyone in the State regardless of class got a tougher deal.

Not exactly true.

Belfry has Lawrence County and Russell in their Region. Russell should be a Top 7 or 8 team in 3A moving forward, if not a Top 5 team.

See my post above..Tilghman has the easiest Region to win... and Bell/Corbin really only have themselves to play until awaiting Region 4.

And please keep this thread to Class 3A only. If you want to discuss another class please start a new thread.

I agree it was tougher on Garrard than any team in 3A, but E'Town is actually in Region 1 and not Garrard's Region 2. Garrard could have won the region in their previous alignment with the team they have coming back this year. Another interesting point here is that the last time Garrard was put in a district with LexCath and Boyle was from 97-2000. Jerry Perry resigned from Garrard before that 1997 season and avoided that gauntlet. Now he gets to face it in his 2nd season this time around.

HAHA... football karma...

To be fair, Garrard and Catholic were in the same 1A district when Perry was at Garrard initially. Both schools moved to 2A and joined Boyle at the same time in 1997. While at Garrard, Perry was 4-0 against Catholic.

He was, but Lex Cath was also just beginning their program, at that time. Anyone could see that they were about to blow up. So, being in a district with both them and Boyle (not to mention Danville) was going to be a whole different situation for Garrard.

Boyle and Lex Cath were about to explode on the state-wide scene at the same time.

Absolutely, although I do believe Garrard twice beat Catholic in 1A when the Knights were ranked #1 in the class. By 1995 and 1996 Catholic's program was already among the best in 1A.

But enough of that. Those are stories for another day!

I would think Bell and Belfry should be favored to play in semi state.

Lex Cath, Boyle, Bardstown, Central, PT makes a pretty tough other half.

I think Belfry will be there waiting every year...Bell needs to worry about a resurgent Corbin, I look forward to seeing the Bell and Corbin rivalry the next few years.

With what Garrard has coming back with their Senior class I do expect them to be competitive with anyone in their region this year. Not sure beyond this year.

And I don't really know if Lex Cath was a #1 ranked team in 95 and 96 (I will take your word on it) but I do remember one year where Garrard beat Beechwood early one year when Perry was there in the 90's.

Season opener, 1995. Garrard won 22-20. Great game!
