July 17, 201511 yr I always thought he had the best resume of any president ever. Could be but it really didn't produce a very successful presidency. And I've always liked the guy.
July 17, 201511 yr Author I seriously don't know if we will ever have a war hero like him again in office. In today's climate. I read his biography the man's life is astonishing. Remove politics from it. What he accomplished prior to office is greater than 99.9% of any citizen in our history. Not when you consider that, nowadays, those being groomed for political office tend to avoid military service like the plague.

July 17, 201511 yr With there being no compulsory draft now, we may not see another President with a Military background. Perry, Graham and Webb are the only ones running this time with Military experience and none of them are expected to win.
July 17, 201511 yr Im But man what he did prior to office wow. And after. I'm happy to see that W has been out a bit, and at times with Clinton. I thought W and Laura were great in his ALS video. But back to Bush Sr., besides not getting around too well, how is he doing?

It's more about our need to have candidates who graduate from ivy league schools. Also those schools don't cater to military members anymore. There was a time when the admissions at those schools looked at experience in the military as a huge positive. Not so much anymore.

I would agree that the left's demonization — which has rebounded in the decades since Vietnam's unrest finally died down in the '80s — of the military on college and high school campuses is something that needs to be severely toned down. The fact that the upper-middle class and above on the economic ladder have abandoned the idea of military service as a career enhancement to the poor schlubs from flyover country has played a big part us to this point and creating a huge disconnect.

I agree with this. I never understood disdain for joining the military. I have quite a few buddies where is saved their lives.
July 18, 201511 yr Author I agree with this. I never understood disdain for joining the military. I have quite a few buddies where is saved their lives. Honestly, it makes me kind of ill. I come from a family full of people who served in the military, all in foreign wars. If I didn't have "authority issues" I'd probably have done so as well. Lord knows I could use the discipline. By the same token, I thought my brother had a screw loose when he joined the Army in the early months of '01, following his college graduation, and told him so simply because I knew he would be on foreign soil with Dubya as president. Scared the hell out of me and fueled a large part of my disdain for him, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz.

He enlisted after Pearl Harbor and delayed the admission to Yale he'd already obtained to do it. His dad was a U.S. senator... who also went to Yale. President Bush was definitely a member of the elite. But when his country came calling in 1941 after Pearl Harbor, he answered without hesitation and that is absolutely praiseworthy.

To be fair, the fact that everybody did then is what makes today so stark in contrast in terms of shared sacrifice. "Our boys" doesn't connote as strong a personal link as what it did in WWII.
July 19, 201511 yr You haven't seen him in awhile, he would always be with President Clinton for good causes after they both left office, I enjoyed seeing and hearing them together. I knew he wasn't doing too great. Hard to believe that he is already in his 90's. THIS!!!
