Is this not a dead period violation?

Featured Replies

I remember a few years ago I was at Central Park in Boone County and saw football activities being conducted by a certain large HS during a dead period. Heard no whistles, just sat in my truck and watched them in shorts and helmets.

It is a violation.

06/22/15 ? Reminders about Dead Period (Bylaw 24) | Kentucky High School Athletic Association

A reminder that the Dead Period for ALL sports starts at 12:00:01 a.m. on June 25 and goes through 11:59:59 p.m. on July 9. There is to be no use of school facilities, team uniforms, transportation, coaches, personnel or anything related to the athletic program.

Does it matter if this is a youth camp, no high school kids receiving instruction?

If the camp is a dead period violation, then I would be surprised if Coach Haywood made a mistake like this. He has been around long enough to know the ins and outs.

In reading Bylaw 24, I think these camps are allowed if it is done within the following guidelines...

Case BL-24-9– What activities are permitted during theKHSAA Dead Period (Bylaw 24, Section 3)?The following activities are permitted by member schoolrepresentatives (including booster organizations) during thedead period: 1) School facilities may be used for nonhigh school agedsummer leagues, tournaments and camps provided 1) adocumented market value lease agreement exists; 2) playersfrom that school are not involved in any manner if a highschool coach is involved; and 3) coaches from that high schoolare not involved in any manner if a player is involved;(2) A school may hold a celebratory activity or activitiescommemorating participation in the KHSAA State Tennis,Track, Softball or Baseball State Championships (Final stateevents, not qualifying rounds). The events shall be celebratoryin nature, featuring recognitions of the athletes and squadmembers. No practice, play or future season planning oractivities may occur;(3) A school may conduct its annual mass physical exams duringthis period provided there is no contact with any memberof the coaching staff for any reason and this is not the soleopportunity provided to the students at that member school;(4) Coaches who have a son or daughter (blood or by marriage)participating may attend contests. Even with attendanceallowed, this person cannot be involved in coaching the team;(5) Coaches may be involved with outside activities and leaguesas long as there is no contact with members of his/her highschool team and as long as the coach is not in attendancewhen any of his/her players are participating. Coaches shouldbe cautioned against using this type of activity in violation ofBylaw 10, Recruitment;(6) Member schools may allow camps to be conducted fornonhigh school students on school athletic property by highschool coaches during this period provided there is no contact with any athlete who had participated at any level within theschool athletic program, regardless of the grade or age of thestudent. The members of the high school team may only workat such a camp if the high school coaching staff is not present;(7) Coaches may serve as a paid contest offi cial;(8) Students who are members of the same high school teammay participate together in outside competition as long asa member of the high school coaching staff does not coachthem or attend the contests; and(9) A participant (or participants) on a school team in a KHSAASport-Activity may compete in a fi nal competition of aprogressive event if the preliminary competition was heldinvolving KHSAA sanctioned and sponsored competition.

I guess it depends if Jones is a "coach" if he's pink slipped there might be a gray area? In the camp brochure it says grades K-10, and also looks like Belfry players are helping with drills.

If he is a coach on the staff and Current Belfry players are there it is a violation. If he is holding a youth camp and no high school players are attending or working I think it would be ok.

Typically speaking most NKY football programs which have youth camps are run by the respective school's coaching staff and team members generally help out. The team participation varies from school to school, but at minimum a handful of team members lend a hand. The youth camps generally occur before the dead period. My neighbors fourth grade son went to the Lloyd youth camp and it was 2 weeks ago approximately.

Interesting, and I agree with both of you (GreatLakes and groundattack). If Jones is a current Belfry coach, and if current Belfry players participated in helping with the young campers, then it would seem to be a dead period violation.

I know that Jones is not a paid coach on Belfry's staff. He has volunteered part time in the past, sort of on and off again. I'm not sure how that applies or what his current status is on the staff, if any.

If they are using school facilities it's a violation. Students and coaches aren't allowed on their campus during the dead period for any reason.

If I am reading it right, according to item #6 posted above, they can be for this type of camp.

Thats not true, many school administration things, teaching interviews and such go on during this time. The coach can be on campus.

If this was a youth camp, no HS student involvement, then this is legal.

My question is why your calling them out?
