Cov Cath Freshman

Featured Replies

I heard the other nite that Cov Cath had three freshman teams, each having 20 kids currently working out and playing. Anyone know if this is accurate? I also know that Thelen at least is practicing with JV only and not included in these numbers. I knew that there would be great interest amongst the freshman class, but did not think it would be over 30%.

No teams are set at this point, but that would mean 60 kids are trying out and coaches tried to split them up for scrimmage purposes. Come October, there is no way they have 3 teams.

Exactly. Didn't 70-something kids try out for the freshman team last year?

Not a bad problem to have, but it could come back on them eventually as kids decide they have a better chance of playing else where. I hope they have a successful team.

In this scenario, what's the thought process of a coach (not just CCH)? Do you take the 15 best players, or do you take chances on kids with possible better upside.

i.e. - If a kid is in the 15-20 range, but judging by genetics is likely to reach the 6'5" range, do you keep?

Never easy to make those decisions. I think you take who will help you and you think will develop at the same time. Tough decisions....hard spot but good spot to be in.

There will be some good competition at intramural games this year at Cov Cath!

Not sure if it's accurate however I heard a couple of weeks ago the sign up numbers for the grade school team's were down. Hopefully that's turned around with some of the sign up posters they put up.

Basketball thread. Based on what I've seen around town, I think you're talking about football.

Doesn't Ryle baseball run two freshmen teams? One consisting of 8th graders and the other freshman. I'm guessing they split the total number of games allowed. Would that work in basketball?

KHSAA allows a school to play X number of games. So if you run 2 teams you are still limited to X number of games combined.

For the sake of the program, if he is giving effort...yes. I have seen the benefits with my own eyes
