June 9, 201511 yr The state of Louisiana features two of the best college shortstops in this year's Draft. Louisiana State's Alex Bregman looks like a lock to go in the first 10 picks, while Trahan is a projected second-rounder who should supplant Jonathan Lucroy as the highest-drafted position player ever from Louisiana-Lafayette. Thought he played third and second base in deference to Bregman on the U.S. collegiate national team last summer, Trahan is capable of sticking at shortstop in pro ball. He has range to both sides, reliable hands and a strong arm. He tends to flip sidearm throws to first base, however, costing him some zip and accuracy. Trahan has well above-average speed but sometimes gets too power-conscious, which leads to swing and misses and harmless flyouts. He'll need to improve his pitch recognition and learn to tone down his approach to take better advantage of his quickness.

June 9, 201511 yr Author 2015 Cincinnati Reds Draft Rounds 3-10 Selections 3rd Round Selection: SS Blake Trahan, Louisiana Lafayette The shortstop was rumored to go as high as the late 1st round. He’s listed at 5′ 9″ and 180 lbs, so he isn’t a physically imposing guy. He does project to be a shortstop though as a professional, so he doesn’t need to be a power hitter of sorts. He’s got above-average speed to work with and a quick first step in the field. He’s had some struggles at times with his accuracy on his throws, but he’s got the arm strength if he can find more consistency. Offensively he projects to have some gap power, but not much over-the-fence power currently or for him to grow into. His swing is unorthodox, but it’s worked for him to this point thanks to strong pitch recognition and good hand-eye coordination.

June 9, 201511 yr Reds select for their 4th round pick, #115 , Miles Gordon, OF, St. Ignatius Catholic SS, Ontario Gordon is a product of the up-and-coming Great Lakes Canadians, though he previously played with the Oakville Royals. An athlete with fast-twitch ability, Gordon burst onto scouts’ radars with impressive performances at Tournament 12 and at the WWBA Championship in Jupiter. The righthanded hitting outfielder has a short stroke geared for line drives, and has the ability to punch the ball into the gaps with backspin. He flashes above-average bat speed and scouts project him to develop below-average power, as he already shows some ability to drive the ball deep to his pull side. Gordon is also an above-average runner and knows how to use his speed, showing strong instincts in the outfield and reading situations well on the basepaths. Scouts give Gordon excellent marks for his makeup, and many believe in his ability to develop into a solid regular. He is committed to the University of San Francisco.
June 9, 201511 yr Reds 5th round selection, #145 , RHP Ian Kahaloa, Campbell HS (HI) A year ago, Kodi Medeiros was a high school pitcher from Hawaii who ended up going in the first round of the Draft. Kahaloa doesn't project to do as well on Draft day, but the right-hander does bring a lot to like on the mound. Early in the spring Kahaloa opened eyes by firing fastballs up to 96-97 mph. He's shown the ability to sit in the 93-94 mph range with good movement, though his overall stuff has been a bit inconsistent. He flashes a solid slider at times, and like with many young pitchers, his changeup is a work in progress, though he shows some feel for it. He's generally around the plate, though his overall command needs to be refined. While Kahaloa isn't the biggest guy in the world, he's strong and athletic, leaving little concern about durability. The right-hander is committed to the University of Hawaii.
June 9, 201511 yr Round 6, #175 , Reds select RHP Jimmy Herget, University of South Florida The Friday night starter for the University of South Florida as a junior, Herget has a track record of success as a three-year member of the rotation. He could potentially stay in that role or get to the big leagues in a hurry coming out of the bullpen. Herget really knows how to pitch, with a four-pitch mix he uses extremely well. He'll pitch with a fastball a tick above-average in the future with heavy sink, throwing it now in the 89-94 mph range. He adds and subtracts from it at will. Herget has two usable breaking balls, a solid average slider and an average curveball, as well as an average changeup, and he commands all four of them well. Herget does all of this from a low three-quarter arm slot, with a kind of Steve Cishek-like delivery. With a bulldog mentality, Herget could rush to the big leagues in a relief role, though his feel for pitching does give him the chance to be a back-end starter. I'm sure @swamprat can give us more insight on him.

And Stephenson has a good amount of power potential. They've drafted 7 players thus far, 4 pitchers, 3 hitters. That's a solid mix.
