Morgan, Bench, Robinson on Vin Scully's all-time opponents' team

Featured Replies

Interesting article in St. Louis paper today. Vin Scully selected his all-star team of Dodgers' NL opponents. (Link to story at bottom)

They are:

1B • Stan Musial

2B • Joe Morgan

SS • Ernie Banks

3B • Mike Schmidt

OF • Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Roberto Clemente

C • Johnny Bench

SP • Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Tom Seaver, Greg Maddux.

RP • Bruce Sutter, Hoyt Wilhelm

Hard to argue with anyone on the list. I think just about all of them (if not all) are in the HOF. I am a little surprised that Pete Rose did not make his list. In the 70's with the Reds and Dodgers being in the same division, Rose and the Reds had some incredible battles with the Dodgers. Again, it is hard to argue with Joe Morgan at 2nd base, Mike Schmidt at 3rd base or any of the outfielders though (the positions Rose played).

Vin's list is heavy on players from the 50's to 80's.

As the article points out, Stan Musial always hit extremely well against the Dodgers, both in Brooklyn and L.A. -- so much so that he was made a real or honorary member of Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame. There's a photo in Vecsey's book of Stan the Man surrounded by Brooklyn Dodger greats laughing it up. Good stuff.

Why even bother having relievers with those four guys in the rotation. Yikes.

While I can't argue with a single pick it might be a little fond reminiscing from his younger days.

True, but who deserves to be on the list ahead of the ones he selected...maybe Bonds but you could argue that is a pretty solid outfield without Bonds. No one currently playing would I put ahead of his selections.

I don't disagree at all with his picks, especially when they are based on what those players did against the Dodgers, not the entire league.
