May 11, 201511 yr I'm going into severe weather alert mode for today. Almost the entire state of Kentucky is now in the slight risk area for severe storms this afternoon. There is a small part of eastern Kentucky that is in the marginal risk area. This afternoon into the early evening most of the state could be looking a strong to severe thunderstorms. The main threats are hail, damaging winds and and an isolated tornado or two. As of now the timing for these storms seem to be around the 4 pm-8pm EDT time period. I will update throughout the day when I can. Take care and stay weather aware today.
May 11, 201511 yr Author Mid morning update: The slight risk area has changed. It now includes only northern Kentucky. Also the timing for these possible storms is now a little earlier. Between 3pm-10pm EDT. If any storms develop the main threats will be damaging winds and hail. I won't rule out a possible short track tornado or two. I'll be back later with an update when the information warrants it.
May 11, 201511 yr Yup...not making any money at the ballpark tonight. Figures it was nice all weekend.
May 11, 201511 yr Yup...not making any money at the ballpark tonight. Figures it was nice all weekend. I think you will be fine, WLW says everytime something pops up, it goes away just as quick. Everything staying in St.Louis and north. We haven't had rain for 17 days here in Northern Kentucky, so not expecting rain or cooler temps at this point
May 11, 201511 yr Author Thunderstorm outlook as everyone can see the 4pm to 8pm time slot is when northern Kentucky will be under the gun. Noon to 4pm EDT 4pm to 8pm EDT
May 11, 201511 yr Author From WLWT 5: STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING Our hot and humid streak comes to an end later today. It will be sunny early and once again heat up quickly. I think most towns hit the low to mid 80s before the rain heads in. Though the first areas of rain could start in Indiana as early as 2-3PM the best chances for rain are after 2PM through around 9PM tonight. We could see some storms with damaging winds or hail as the primary threat. The storms today are firing along a cold front. Yes, this is the same system responsible for the tornadoes and late last week and over the weekend in the Central Plains, but now that it moves in our direction it is a much weakened version of that front... and though our tornado threat is not zero, it is very low. The cold front will bring spotty rain early afternoon, but better chances late afternoon and early evening. So if you have plans or a game to attend this evening plan on rain delays. The rain will cool us down quickly, dropping off to the 70s by 5PM. After the storm threat ends the cool air settles in. Highs the next few days will be in the low 70s with tons of sunshine! By the weekend the heat and humidity are back in place. That means each afternoon Fri-Sunday we will have the potential for some pop up showers or storms. Forecast Updated By Meteorologist Randi Rico
May 11, 201511 yr Author The day 1 convective outlook has just been updated. I'm waiting for the release of the map. Cincinnati now looks to be in the enhanced area for severe storms. Also the slight chance area looks to have been expanded southward towards the I-64 corridor. Here is the new map for this afternoon: Then enhanced area could see numerous severe storms that will be more persistent and widespread. A tornado or two is possible with wind damage reports and hail 1-2" in diameter. This seems to be a rapidly changing situation so everyone in northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area stay weather aware this afternoon.
May 11, 201511 yr Author So, tonight isn't looking good to get softball games in around 5:30? No it is not. The SPC has just issued a forecast discussion for most of Kentucky from just west of the I-65 corridor to eastern Kentucky. This is for a severe thunderstorm watch. Usually a watch is issued an hour or two after the discussion is issued.
