Get better insurance then, the insurance should not dictate our sport. Find a way to make more money, cut a few of the talking heads who do nothing at the KHSAA, raise championship ticket costs, get more sponsors, etc... etc.... Meet with the companies tell them your concerns and shop around to get a better fit.

No but for some reason they have given basketball priority in June which still makes no sense to me. Of course, a lot of the things the KHSAA does makes no sense.

If that's truly the issue then shut down ALL sports during the summer. Boy can you imagine the howling from the basketball coaches if they were told no open gyms during the summer?

 

Taking helmets off during any football activity is more dangerous.

And as to the second part I have no issue with that. IMVHO 2 a days are over rated and are around simply because "we've always done it".

This document helps explain some of the changes. Helmets however is not a chang. It was not legal for any team to wear helmets from last spring practice until July 10th. So either there is some confusion or a lot of schools have been cheating.

So the KHSAA document sent to all coaches is wrong? It clearly states that no helmet is to be used not only in June, but from the last spring practice which includes May for most school. I am not saying that schools have not been doing their own 7 on 7s with helmets, however it has been outside of the allowed rule .

I honestly don't know anymore.

As Strother Martin said in Cool Hand Luke, "what we have here is a failure to communicate." The KHSAA could be criticized for a lack of communication on the reasoning of the proposed changes, the dates those changes will take place, and for the continued alteration of guidelines for football in KY.

 

The "attack" on football is not coming from within the KHSAA. I think the proposed changes are a proactive measure to protect the state from potential litigation. NFL-type lawsuits at the HS level would likely threaten the life of football. If the NFHS is recommending to states that new guidelines are to be considered, a state association is taking on great liability by ignoring the suggestion. Like it or not, change becomes necessary.

 

No matter the guidelines we work under, we are still charged with the care of young athletes. We may have great beliefs that the "old way" was a better way. I would hope that the relationships developed and competitive nature of our game would be enough to inspire coaches to be creative enough to do their job within a new set of rules. Personally, helmets in June, full gear in July, or unlimited practices during camp never ranked high on the list of why I love coaching. Football will always be the ultimate "team" game. The need for everyone to have a role, everyone to contribute still remains. The need for coaches to inspire, teach, lead, and establish a great chemistry for their program may be at a higher premium than ever before. Yes, football is changing. Perhaps it is changing to survive.

Insurance dictates everything it touches. Take health insurance... doctors can't practice medicine they have to do it the way the insurance company dictates. Insurance company determines the tests they order, in the sequence they order them, and the treatment that is given. I think insurance companies have forgotten that they are a service industry and not the ones being served.

 

So, no, insurance shouldn't dictate the sport, but it does.

The simplest way to explain this is the school year follows the fiscal year. Therefore last June was the 2013/2014 school year and the bylaw below was in effect last June. Football players were allowed to wear helmet last June.

 

From 2013/2014:

Case BL-24-4- What are the restrictions on football

practice and the use of equipment from June 1 to June

24 in compliance with Bylaw 24, Sec. 2?

These restrictions are:

(1) A football player may wear a helmet during any football

specifi c drill or session that is supervised or attended by any

member of the high school coaching staff, but may wear no

other gear as defi ned by NFHS Football Rule 1, Section 5;

 

All other changes were made in July 2014 or later for the 2014/2015 school year, so technically the document sent to all coaches is not wrong. The difference is June 2015 is the first year that both the 'old' and 'new' bylaw about June helmets in the document will be in effect because the bylaw came out after June 2014.
