I'm absolutely dumbfounded

Normally 15 weeks of student teaching is required.

I'm with you @OlDog75, but it would be tough to turn down a GOOD job when it becomes available. If it were me, I would ask the employer if I could except the position, but get a deferred/delayed start date to accommodate completing the student teaching requirement. Another option would be to accept the position immediately, and see if the possibility exists where time-off is permitted every month/quarter etc to complete the student teaching requirement. Some employers are flexible and some are not. After all the work to get to this point - I would at least ask.

I know the longer this is delayed, the less likely it is your friend will ever go back and complete this. I would try to find a way to complete it, you never know when/if the Master's will come in handy in the future. A few years from now the new job may go away, or they end up flat hating it.

What if this was your son or daughter? And you were helping to finance the schooling?

Yep, I'd be ticked and we would be having a serious discussion.

Walking away from a career in education is becoming more and more common unfortunately. And no one can blame the young aspiring educators... it is a very difficult and stressful profession.

As I understand it the student teaching is an entire semester, not just a few weeks. At least that's how it is at WKU right now. It's a shame they couldn't finish up to have that to fall back on. Or have they already been in the classroom and will complete the student teaching in May? Boy in that case I would have a fit. Let's face it, few entry level jobs can't be delayed 7 weeks.

My son had a culinary degree started working in the field didn't like it and then went back for his Criminal Justice degree and is one semester short. Decided to take Executive Chet position in an Atria Assisted Living facility. Great pay and great benefits and he is happy.

Even though I felt like he blew our money for 2 years in Criminal Justice, I am super happy he is doing the job he likes. No use getting mad, just continue to support him.

Can't lie, it was frustrating.

Agree. our son tried it for a few years and has his masters, but wasn't happy. He is now working at Toyota and loves it.

Oh, he/she has been in the classroom this semester. But the 15 week student teaching had already started. I kept asking what school he/she was assigned and kept getting an excuse. I asked why they had not started yet and he/she told me, "I'm starting in a couple of weeks, I got credit for coaching for two years." I thought, huh? But I am not a college grad so I believed what was being fed to me. Of course now it is too late to start the student teaching in order to get the Master's in May. I'm extremely disappointed in this person. I just cannot believe that you go this far just to quit.

Got ya, boy I would feel the same way.

I love my kids but sometimes I don't like them.
