I had two books about football and baseball rules, history, etc. when I was young. I read them cover to cover so many times. I remembered this because it was in the book. Y.A. Tittle was the Qb that threw the passes! I don't know if those books are hanging out somewhere, gonna have to look now.

I grew up watching the Cleveland Browns, but really started just after Jim Browns days.

 

On the offensive line for the Browns during that era was Gene Hickerson, Dick Schafrath, John Wooten, Mike McCormick.

 

I can't remember any more, but if I still had my old football cards, I could figure some of the other ones out.

Good job, Strongopenyon. John Wooten was the guard on the other side opposite Gene Hickerson. Jim Brown has been lobbying to get him in the Hall of Fame. Doesn't look like that will happen, but as Brown notes, you don't gain 5.2 yards per carry without a good line.

Dick Modzelewski was a strong defensive tackle for the Browns and some other teams, Giants and Redskins, I believe. His brother Ed was the running back that Jim Brown replaced during training camp of his rookie year.

 

Ed Modzelewski was asked about being replaced by Jim Brown and he said that he (Ed) had a lot of friends on the team and so during training camp they would hit Brown a little harder than they normally would during camp but Ed could see as Brown kept bursting out of their arms they started to respect him and Ed saw the writing on the wall. BTW, Brown gained 942 yards his rookie year (12 game season) to lead the league.

 

I still have all my old football cards. I learned a lot reading the backs of those cards.

1. ... if you know the name of the LA Rams running back who also was an Olympic medalist in 400 m. He played in the 50's and 60's.

 

2. While I'm at it... San Francisco 49ers had a powerful running attack in the 1950's. You're of a certain age if you can give me the names and nicknames of their two superb running backs. Spelling correctly is optional cause one of them is difficult.
