January 21, 201511 yr Land deals are lifeblood of government corruption in the 21st century. This one's even less blatant than most, although you'd be hard pressed to find a better-connected, better operated national real estate company than CBRE. They're horrible to deal with, but that's mostly because of their tremendous size and immense holdings. I'm always amazed by how many members of Louisville's Metro Council end up in real estate speculation. It's a remarkable coincidence... I agree, and the land deals go back to the inception of this nation. Politics and money are at the crux of very poor city/community planning IMO. The reason...developers either are the members of government making the decisions or the developers have the members of government in their pocket. All this so we can continue to rape and pillage the land and our environment to pad people's pockets. (Maybe this should go in the rant thread.)

It's seriously the worst thing going on in Louisville (and that's saying something) and hampers just about everything else. - Cordish's deal for the Water Company block in which they were just paid $5 million to abandon their previously-obtained rights to develop the empty lot just so someone else could be given huge incentives to do the same. - Building the Yum Center next to the river instead of on the much-cheaper and previously mentioned Water Company Block further down Second Street. - The new VA Hospital in town is going to prove a massive boon to the property owners (who obtained the property then successfully lobbied for a new VA hospital to be built on site so that that the feds would have to buy the property from them) and a massive boondoggle to just about everyone else involved. ... there are too many to even name.

You aren't crazy?!? :eyeonyou: Seriously, you are right his interests in Halliburton were/are a conflict of interest, and he should not have been involved in the decision process which you directly impact his financial interests.

The corruption goes so much further than that. 21st Century American Capitalism isn't about who runs a business the most efficiently or who makes the best product; it's about who can lobby and manipulate elected officials the best. It's the only sure way to make a profit these days.

If insider-trading rules were ever applied and enforced to politicians lots of office-holders and spouses and others (as you point out) would go to jail. I go back and forth on term-limits. But this type profiteering purely from political connections pushed the needle to yes on term limits. The founders never envisioned 'professional politicians' - and now is it the standard. Crony-capitalization favors large, established companies and hurts small innovative companies. Lobbyists, over-bearing regulations smother small, nimble companies snuffing them out. While the big, slow politically connected get favors in the supposed free market place.
