2015 Oscar Nominations

Featured Replies

Without seeing the Movie yet I will predict American Sniper winning 3 Oscars. Just a hunch

Best Picture

American Sniper

Birdman

Boyhood

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Imitation Game

Selma

Theory of Everything

Whiplash

I'm batting a big fat .000

I will see American Sniper soon though.

One of my daughters saw Boyhood and keeps telling me I need to see it, she loved it. I think from what I hear it wouldn't surprise me for Patricia Arquette winning best supporting actress for it.

Boyhood and Birdman are the two I keep hearing are the favorites for Best Picture. Intrigued by Birdman, not so much Boyhood.

I'll go with Bradley Cooper winning Best Actor and Reese Witherspoon winning Best Actress.

Ed Norton and Patricia Arquette taking Supporting Actor and Actress.

So far I've seen half the Best Picture nominees:

Birdman

Boyhood

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Whiplash

Really looking forward to Selma and The Imitation Game. Less so the other two but I imagine they'll be pretty good.

Of the four I've seen, Whiplash was my favorite, but it won't win.

Same here.

I always like to watch the nominated documentaries too:

Citizenfour

Finding Vivian Maier

Last Days in Vietnam

Salt of the Earth

Virunga

I know Virunga is on Netflix.

Last year by mid-February all five of them had made their way to Netflix. I'll try to watch those the same way.

Speaking of those documentaries, was "Jodorowsky's Dune" released in 2013? I thought it came out early in 2014 and would have been a shoo-in for one of those nominations. It was great.

Grand Budapest Hotel is available via HBO On Demand

Getslow, how is Whiplash?

Bovada has Boyhood as a huge (1/14) odds on favorite to win Best Picture. Grand Budapest Hotel has the next best odds at 12/1.

Getslow, how is Whiplash?

I loved it. Worth the price of admission just for J.K. Simmons' performance as the maniacal music instructor.

And the music is pretty amazing. I'm not much of a jazz guy, but they do a great job with the selections in this movie. According to the director, about 50% of the drumming in the movie is lead actor Miles Teller playing live on set, not dubbed over.

It's a real study in obsession and something that I think a lot of people can see, even if they're not music folks. Certainly top-level athletes have that same driving force that pushes them to want to be the best.

Too bad "Lego Movie" was left off the Animated list. Not awesome as the song goes in that movie.

I've come here today to pen this little rhyme

about Selma, the most remarkable film of all-time.

It wrote and directed,

photographed and then acted

itself, like a road without workers who laid it.

So I offer this stricture

on its nod for Best Picture

while not one for the people who made it.

No actors, no artists, no cast, and no crew;

it sprang from the ground and they showed it to you.

Maybe Legend and Common will prove it belongs.

But did it get the nod just because of their song?

I want to see it now just based on all the praise J.K. Simmons is getting. Loved that guy since he was Emil Skoda on L&O.
