Region 1 All A Preview

Top Teams:

1. Murray, 13-5, The Tigers are the team to beat. They have beat Paducah Tilghman and Marshall County and have established themselves as the team most likely to beat Calloway County. They come at you in bunches. They play 10+ players on most nights. 1st group will play a 2-2-1 and the second group will play man to man or a 1-2-2. They try to wear teams down. They are lead in scoring by Sophomore Preston English and Junior Duane Curtis.

2. Ballard Memorial 8-9, This is where the seeding becomes muddy. Any of the teams left could have been the #2 seed. Ballard has an impressive win @ Carlisle County on January 3rd. They have not had much success in the tournament except in 2010 when they won it and 2011 when they lost in the finals. They are led by Junior Keagon Cooper and he has a good supporting cast of 7 others averaging between 4 and 9 points.

3. St. Mary, 9-9, The Vikings are the defending champs although their roster looks much different than last year. Coach Greg Overstreet has got his inexperienced group playing well considering the losses by graduation.

4. Carlisle County 11-5. Of all the teams the Comets are probably most disappointed in their seed. The winner of the Carlisle County/Mayfield game definitely has the toughest path to the finals. They first have to play each other and then have to go through Murray. The Comets are led in scoring by Junior Ethan Weatherspoon followed closely by junior Paxton Crider.

4 tie: Mayfield 7-7 and Carlisle both wished they could have moved up a spot or two to avoid this 1st round matchup. Mayfield is led by Marshall Bacon. The football standout has had some ankle problems but when he plays he is their top gun. Mayfield has several players that can put up some big numbers. Nick Felts is a 3 point sharpshooter. They also have Zach Tyler, Trajon Bright, and

6. Fulton City 4-11, has played better than they did earlier in the year. They are led by Stephen Houston at 12 points a game. Brandon Walker who just joined the team during the Christmas break has averaged 9 points a game and gives them another scorer. They have four other players averaging between 5-8 points.

7. Hickman County 4-12, the loss of Rayshun Shields hurts the Falcons. Ethan Carter has played well as has 8th grader Jordayn Naranjo. They lack the experience to knock off Ballard Memorial.

8. Fulton County 7-9, The addition of Joe Holman during the break should help but won’t be enough to get past Murray. The Pilots are led in scoring by Johnathan Roberson and Major Davis.

9. CCA 1-15

10. CFS 2-13

Saturday:

#7 Hickman County vs. #10 CFS: This game should not be competitive. The Falcons should win easily against an outmanned CFS team.

#8 Fulton County vs. #9 CCA: the same result with this one as the game above. The Pilots should advance with no problem.

Monday:

Winner of Fulton County/CCA vs. #1 Murray: Murray beat Fulton County early in the year. 71-29 and should have no problem advancing to the semifinals.

Prediction: Although the Pilots are playing better they should be no match for the depth of Murray.

Tuesday

Winner of Hickman County/CFS vs. #2 Ballard Memorial: Hickman County and Ballard Memorial have not played this year but Ballard’s length and athleticism should help them beat the Falcons.

Prediction: Ballard should win this win easily. The length, size, and athleticism will be too much for the Falcons.

Wednesday:

#4 Carlisle County vs. #5 Mayfield: According the LIT rankings that seeded this tournament they were tied for 4/5. Carlisle defeated Mayfield in OT 68-64 on December 19th. These 2 teams have history in the All A. In 2013 the Comets beat Mayfield in the Championship on a shot with 3 seconds left. Last year, the Comets were a #7 seed and upset the #2 seed Mayfield to make an unexpected trip to the semifinals. The Cardinals are a well balanced team but lead in scoring by Marshall Bacon with 15.8 and Nick Felts with 11. Several others can score as well including Bright, Lumson, Tyler, and Noel. The Comets are very similar. They are led by Ethan Weatherspoon with 16.2 and Paxton Crider with 13.6 but have several others capable of big nights in Norsworthy, Carrico, and A. Bailey. Kellett and Morefied are capable scorers as well. Depth in scoring is big for both teams.

Prediction: The Comets continue their winning ways in the All A against Mayfield in a close win.

#3 St. Mary vs. #6 Fulton City: St. Mary beat the bulldogs 51-31 on December 19th. The pressure that the Vikings break and their tough 2-3 match-up zone should help them handle Fulton City easily. The Vikings are led in scoring by Ben Hooper and Austin Hubert both averaging 13 points a game. Davis Sims and Payton Smith both chip in 9 points each to help with scoring. The Bulldogs are led by Stephen Houston at 12 points and has several others that are averaging between 5-8 points in Brandon Walker, Michael Thomas, Nick Ware, Queshon Ward, and Zach Howard, and Areon Ferrell. 3 point shooting for the Bulldogs will be the key to trying to upset the Vikings. The Vikings usually play a 2-3 match-up zone.

Prediction: Close for a half then the Vikings will pull out at least a double digit victory

Friday:

Semifinals

If games go as predicted.

#1 Murray vs. #4 Carlisle County, The Comets have the experience and depth to compete with Murray. Both teams go deep in their bench. The Tigers playing 10-12 players and the Comets going 9 deep. The benches could be the deciding factor. Murray will pressure full court most of the game and even in the half-court stay aggressive with trapping defenses. Carlisle’s guards will have to handle the pressure and attack it for easy baskets. Because of Murray’s aggressive play they are susceptible to offensive boards.

Prediction: The press wears the comets down and they win by single digits.

#2 Ballard Memorial vs. #3 St. Mary, this would be the 3rd time that these teams have already played. They have split both their game with both teams winning by 8. The Bombers beat the Vikings without their leading scorer Keagan Cooper, who is averaging 17.7. The key for Ballard this year is their depth and their depth of scoring. They have several that are capable of having big nights, Cody Newton, 9.0, Clay Newton, 8.7, Bledsoe, 7.5, Parsons, 7.4, Chandler, 6.5 and Terrell, 5.8. The Vikings are led in scoring by Ben Hooper and Austin Hubert both averaging 13 points a game. Davis Sims and Payton Smith both chip in 9 points each to help with scoring.

Prediction: The Bombers win the rubber match in a close game.

Note: 1st Region is the only region to seed their All A.

I think the Seventh Region seeds its teams.

The tourney is at Mayfield this year and that gives them the edge for sure. Also, OT loss by Mayfield to Carlisle at Carlisle this year without Bacon at 100% in a lot of that game and the refs being the most effective 6th man in that game for Carlisle like they always are down there. Bacon back healthy again now and back to averaging about 20 per game. Bright looking more comfortable and Felts playing more aggressively. Guthrie steeping up nicely and Romans a beast at handling the ball. All that with home court advantage in the All A equals win over Carlisle.

Mayfield also beat Ballard a couple nights ago at Mayfield and beat St. Mary at Mayfield. Again, given home court advantage where it seems is the only place that the officials hesitate to take pleasure in calling fouls on Mayfield. I see a Mayfield/Murray final.

You may be right on Mayfield beating Carlisle but it can't be a Mayfield/Murray final.

The winner of the Carlisle/Mayfield game will play Murray in the semifinal.

Note: 1st Region is the only region to seed their All A.

The 6th and 7th Region in Louisville both use the Litkenhous Ratings to seed their All-A tournament.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information.

I've always thought it was pretty cool that the 1st Region seeded like that, especially being such a large All-A region.

Hope Carlisle isn't looking past Mayfield which should be a good game!!

I am looking forward to seeing the Murray/Carlisle matchup. Carlisle is the closest one to match up with them. Should be a full court game from start to finish.

Thought it would be the matchup for the finals untill Carlisle got

the seed they did.

Gotcha..I haven't seen the brackets..just talking out loud on the matchups. Murray would be a tough out for Mayfield due to the limited bench for Mayfield but home court can even things up more. I think Mayfield beats Carlisle.

Its a shame Mayfield may have to go through Murray to get to the final because they can beat any team left on the other side at home because they already have.

#2 Ballard Memorial survived last night against #7 Hickman County 52-47.

Tonight's games:

6:00 Carlisle County vs. Mayfield

7:45 St. Mary vs. Fulton City

Friday:

6:00 Murray vs. winner of Carlisle/Mayfield

7:45 Ballard Memorial vs winner of St. Mary/Fulton City

Looks like I nailed it on Mayfield/Carlisle game. Mayfield put on a clinic and scored 91 points and won by 20. Nice Work Cardinals!

Carlisle Coach followed the ref across the floor at the end of the game yelling in his ear, clearly enraged. What was that about?

Did Mayfield give Carlisle a taste of their own medicine with some home cooking?
