Thanks, Avid Tiger. Oldham Co was ferocious in zoning Trinity, sagging on Big Ray (Spalding), doubling player with ball. OC in great physical condition. They came to play. Maybe Trinity a little spent from playing mini-NBA teams in Florida but came back to life in 2Q with 12-0 run to finish for 27-20 lead at half. Oldham Co came out in 3Q as aggressive as before but Trinity was stickier & faster on O & D & won 2H 31-18. Oldham Co will be hot come regional play. Their #5 can hit the three, take my word for it. Rocks need some rest for Lexington Christian game tomorrow at 9pm. This is a terrific tourney.

As an outsider looking in I get why Trinity is ranked #1 in the state and why they are ranked nationally. I get why they have several soon to be D-1 basketball players on their team. I get why they have the reputation they have and I get why they are extremely successful year in and year out under Coach Szabo.

 

I absolutely do not get why Spalding doesn't touch the ball everytime they are on offense. Maybe my expectations are too high. I don't know. I know I wasn't overly impressed and I couldn't wait to be floored when I saw them. They looked more efficient last year. 6-7 D-1 basketball players and you scored 58 points? I need to see more from Trinity basketball.

Five D-1 as of 12/26, 4 signed and one offered. Trinity is not about Ray Spalding getting touches every time on offensive end. I believe Coach Szabo has proven he knows how to be successful.

Seriously?....they just returned from one of the toughest high school tourneys in the nations where they played #1/#2 on consecutive nights and just flipped a switch to manhandle a once beaten team?

And I acknowledged that Szabo has proven to be successful when I said that "I get why they are extremely successful under Szabo year in and year out". It just seems to me, as an outsider, that their offense could be more effiecient if it involved Raymond more. Levitch is arguably one of the best shooters in the state. He'd benefit from Ray getting more touches. Stafford has shown an ability of score when slashing to the basket and get get hot shooting the ball also. He'd benefit from Ray getting more touches. Ray can pass it, shoot it and score it. At 6'10" he can provide ball protection at the high school level that not many teams can mess with. Once you add in West, Thieneman, Ramser and Murphy it just seems like they'd be more efficient on offense and more scary looking. As of today Trinity doesn't scare me and I could see them not making it to the Sweet 16.

Yes. Seriously. Maybe KY high school basketball is much better than what people think nationally. I know I expected more from them today. They play excellent defense and defense wins championships. I just felt like Trinity looked shaky on offense all night. They only have one true ball handler on the team from what I saw and nobody looked for Ray down low.

6'9* :lol: But on a more serious note, to the second bolded, its been that way and will probably stay that way. They only look for him heavily when they're playing a tough team and are a bit scared and may be in trouble.

 

THSrocks always says its not about Ray and I agree its not all about Ray. But when you have one of the top players nationally and he gets less touches than everyone else, there is a problem. If anyone watches the schools with other top national players, they always get their touches and the offenses usually run through them.

What kind of numbers did Nathan Dieudonne put up for Szabo when Trinity won the state and he was Mr. Basketball? I don't recall anyone putting up huge numbers under Szabo. Maybe Reid Markham. Could be wrong.

I don't know many knowledgeable Trinity fans who are surprised by this. Szabo seems to be a system coach who is hesitant to change his ways to accommodate the strengths of particular players. He has been successful, and as head coach he gets to coach the team as he sees fit. However, after getting by Ballard last year, Trinity had the most talent at the state tournament and they did not win. It will be interesting to see how people will react if they don't win the state tournament this year.
