Owensboro Invitational Tournament

Featured Replies

Action kicks off this afternoon at all 4 high schools in the area. Between the boys and the girls there will be 40 games in just 3 days. Should make for some pretty good games. I know Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford will be at Apollo on Monday morning for the Apollo/University Heights game. We'll be out at the schools covering all of the action. Here are the pools and teams.....

A-Apollo, Bowling Green, University Heights; at Apollo

B-Catholic, Murray, Russellville; at Owensboro Catholic High School

C-Daviess County, Monroe County, Iroquois; at Daviess County

D-Mclean, Henderson, Warren Central; at Owensboro High

Matchups between the winners of the pools A&B and C&D(semifinals) will be held on Monday night with the 3rd place game and championship taking place at the Sportscenter on Tuesday night.

Do I understand correctly that Owensboro is not playing in the Owensboro Invitational Tournament? I know it is because they are playing in the King of the Bluegrass, but that just does not seem right.

Yes, since OHS is playing in the King of the Bluegrass they are not in the OIT. I think the "Owensboro" in the new OIT stands more for the community instead of the high school. Mclean County is standing in for OHS this year.

Central and Henderson got shafted being out into same pool.

Are game times correct on the khsaa board?

Yeah and just think if Owensboro was not in the king of the bluegrass then all three of them would have been in the same pool. I feel sorry for McLean county getting Henderson and Warren Central.

I'm more upset about the fact that Central is the one that had to play two games in one day - and Henderson County is the second one they'll play. I give Central a less than 5% chance of winning that game on roughly an hours rest.

BTW, listening to the game I have to renew that objection. I decry any tournament format that would pit one team on an hour of rest against one that had DAYS of rest. I think the Dragons lose this game anyway but this is even worse than the first game of the year these teams played. The Henderson County commentators have noted several times how tired the Dragons look.

I also think it's messed up that every single 4th Region team in the event were the ones burdened with that.

To be honest it's probally a money thing. Henderson will have more people at the games then the host team. So they for sure put henderson in a bracket where they could make some money. Tomorrow at 10:45 they play McLean county and that is only game until that night.

Chris Mack, Anthony Grant and Travis Ford are all supposed to be at Owensboro Sportscenter tomorrow morning to watch Eli Wright.

I don't have a problem with the concept of a "host", merely the timing of games. Why couldn't the game have been played earlier today? Better yet, why wouldn't they have started the tourney on Saturday? It's just an odd situation to put teams in that sort of situation. Even in the old Sweet 16 setup you didn't have that short of time between double duty on the same day.

Competitively, it would have also worked far better for Warren Central to have played Henderson County first. Oh well, such is life.

Im not sure why you couldnt have started this thing on Saturday and skipped the 2-a-day game scenario. I agree 100% with Dragon on this one. I fully expect a Henderson Bowling Green championship game. Bowling Green has already qualified for the semi finals with wins over UHA and Apollo. They will play the winner of the Owensboro Catholic/Murray game in the morning. On the other side I expect Daviess County and Henderson to represent pools C & D. Could make for a non district, district 3rd place game between DC and OCath. We'll see.

I thought Apollo showed as well tonight as they have all season. They played BG hard and if they have taken better care of the basketball in the 4th quarter they may have been able to steal one. You can see Barker tinkering with things both on offense and defense. It is encouraging to see.

This was a fun tournament to watch. I though Daviess County showed to be very impressive. Currie and Griffith are a really nice 1-2 punch for DC. Both players are very underrated on the broad scope of things in western KY. They should have won the whole thing. Seemed like DC got away from what was working for them in the 4th quarter. Credit some of that to BG and their ability to speed up the pace. I hope they continue this thing and maybe even extend it a day, so we can avoid the whole 2 a day thing.
