Fans observing 10th Region basketball from a distance would probably presume that Augusta's glory days are over with Bach's graduation. While the team isn't as strong, they are still a good team. The nucleus of Snapp, Maddox, & Crawford is solid. They each play with composure, and as one coach told me over the summer, "Those kids who know how to win."

 

I was really impressed with Owens Crawford last night. He's much more assertive on the offensive end and seems to have bulked up some, which was needed. Connor Maddox has also made significant strides offensively, becoming more than just a deadly perimeter shooter. He was driving the basketball a lot last night. Snapp did a nice job on the glass and David Tucker surprised me more than anyone. He has really improved, has decent size, and gives Augusta post presence that they need.

 

As for Bracken County, Austin Crawford played really well and he has to do a lot of things. He jumps center, runs the point, gets others involved, and leads the team in rebounding. His athleticism is so very impressive. What hurt Bracken last night was that Crawford was the only double figures scorer. Kolton Williams hit three 3's in the first half, but I don't recall him getting many 2nd half looks. I thought Brady Jones played fairly well down low. Jacob Hamilton is Bracken County's second best player, but Augusta did a pretty good job keeping him in check. But for the Polar Bears to have success, they're going to have to find some help for Crawford on a consistent basis. He had half the team's points last night--well, 29 of 60--and that's coming off Friday's game against Knott Central where he had 27 of the team's 38 points. The team is young, starting 4 sophomores and a junior, so some of those struggles are understandable. But that's the key for this team going forward--finding help for Crawford.

 

Augusta has been better than Bracken County for the last three years--the Bach era. In my opinion, they are still better, but I think the gap has narrowed.

 

Kudos to both squads last night. Both teams played really hard, it was a clean game, and very entertaining. In addition, the two fan bases came together for a great cause to raise some money for cancer research. Really glad I was able to be there.

Looking foward to seeing you when PC comes to Brooksville Dawgs. Augusta has a solid team with a ton of balance. Cant just sit on one player, you have to defend all 5. Bracken is young and inexperienced. Games like last night will be learning experiences and will only better the Polar Bears. They grew up a little last night before our eyes and the season is still young. As for Augusta they are off to another great start, and will have some big games to close out December. I will be interested to see how they match up with Harrison, Scott, and Boone. As those will be some interesting games. 2 of the 3 could be potential Regional tournament matchups come March. :thumb:

Augusta has a solid group of players, but you do have to admit the loss of such a great player does have them take a slight step backwards. It will be good to see how the team reacts to changing their roles from a support system to leadership/scoring roles. Sounds like they are learning their new roles quickly.

Didn't mean to overstate the point TAC and agree with you, it's early and BC is young. I just know that with my son leaving for BU these kids have had to hear "it's over" too many times. I love their heart, effort and the way they've adjusted and just wanted to give them a boost here. I just keep telling them' "you're the "defending" back to back 39th District Champions until someone beats you on the scoreboard".

There's no doubt that when you lose the best player to ever walk the halls of your school ( No disrespect to Bill Kelcsh, etc.) that your team will take a step back. Seems to me that, at least for the moment, that step is a little smaller than people wanted it to be. Games with Harrison and Scott coming up will tell quite a bit about this bunch. Like AndOnedad said in another post, 2-5 in the 10th region is a tight bunch... I think that 5-12 is as well.
