So if your kid is in 8th grade now and his bday is in August he would play 15u correct? But then next year when he's a freshman he would basically be in 15u again?

I would definitely think it would!

High school is usually when the younger kids catch up though. It will not be as easy for the older ones as it was in middle. That's when the playing field evens back up!

The Age Based National Championships (8U-14U) were a great success in 2015 and will continue to be offered this summer. For the segment of our AAU membership that wants to keep their teams grade based, the AAU has something to offer you in 2016.

PLEASE NOTE: The eligibility date for 2016 is August 31, 2016. Please use the 2016 Rule Book for determining eligibility for the 2016 Membership Year!

PILOT PROGRAM – GRADE BASED CHAMPIONSHIP

Pursuant to Section I A 3b of the Handbook, the executive committee has created 2016 Grade Based National Championships for the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades as a pilot program. Criteria/eligibility is as follows:

A. Eligibility

5th Grade – An athlete must be in the 5th grade as of October 1, 2015 and can be no older than 12 on

August 31, 2016

6th Grade – An athlete must be in the 6th grade as of October 1, 2015 and can be no older than 13 on August 31, 2016

7th Grade – An athlete must be in the 7th grade as of October 1, 2015 and can be no older than 14 on August 31, 2016

8th Grade – An athlete must be in the 8th grade as of October 1, 2015 and can be no older than 15 on August 31, 2016

A. Qualification

a. Any district may conduct grade based championship, but only if also conduct age based championships

b. Teams from districts that conduct grade based championships must participate in the district tournament in order to qualify for the national championship. All teams that participate in the district championship qualify for nationals

c. Proof of eligibility must be available for review, by an AAU designee. If the documents are not available the team is subject to removal from the competition. Documents include school report card plus any of the following:

1. An unexpired Passport

2. Valid Driver’s License

3. Department of Motor Vehicles I.D. card issued within three (3) years

4. Military Dependent I.D.

5. A certificate of live birth with a raised seal, along with a school issued picture I.D.

C. Rules

A. All competition rules apply under Section III to this pilot program except where modified in this section

There is an 8th grade team in your county that could start five 15 year old 8th graders on their middle school team and bring a few more off the bench

Yes 15 is older then what some are use too but all hold backs are 14 when they start 8th grade and turn 15 at some point during the year. Some turn 15 a few days after start of school and some school has already ended.

There are high schools all over Southern KY that have 18 year old juniors and 17 year old sophomores. There are freshmen who drive to school. It happens.
