When there are three top 10 teams in one district, someone has to be the three seed.

1. Physically demands of football and basketball are completely different.

2. Basketball can play multiple games a week. Every additional game doesn't add an extra week.

3. Coaches of successful programs that I have spoken to don't consider the district tournament part of the playoffs. They say the playoffs start at the regionals where only 2 from each district advance.

 

1. I agree. That's why there is only 1 football game per week. But both have the threat of injury in every game.

 

2. I agree here as well. However, eliminating the 4v1 games doesn't shorten the football playoffs at all. It would give byes to the #1 seeds and also present them with the advantage of a week off. You're not proposing eliminating the #3 seeds also, are you? That reduces the playoff field by half in order to avoid the first round mismatch.

 

3. Although I agree with this, the playoffs aren't only for select, successful programs. Everyone benefits from participation.

All Tell ... on #3. Seriously? You are telling me there are coaches (excuse me - "successful coaches") who don't consider the district tournament part of the post season tournament? If yes, I would like to know why they say that. What happens if they lose a first round district game?

Why are they wrong and you right? They know they are going to be in the district tournament every year and just like it should be in football they know if they don't make it to the top 2 they are done. Then the playoffs start.

I actually think the playoffs start with District Play.

 

Here is why - Its all about getting home filed advantage and a #1 seed. So I know many coaches that work extremely hard to make sure that happens.

Not with respect to the complaints I read about the first round games. The complaints I read mainly focus on the fact that they are not competitive, will have a running clock in the first half, neither team seems interested, they're not productive because the 4 seed has no chance, etc.

 

I have read only one comment regarding the 4v1 games being a safety concern. That was in the Beechwood v Bracken County thread. The mismatch in these games are more about ability, technique, coaching and execution than they are about one team being physically superior to the point of a safety concern.

 

Why is it so much a different animal vs. basketball?

 

 

There are more than a few games that are a safety concern. People will not throw their programs under the bus or do not have any supporters on here.

I would hope so considering there are almost double the amount of basketball teams in the state than football.
