Conner 32 Grant County 20

Featured Replies

The offense is fine, and really does fit their talent and personnel. They don't have the players to run the spread, or a more passing heavy scheme. Aside from the Cooper game this year, they've been in every district game the last two years. They just haven't learned to win yet. They always seem to make a few little mistakes or miss opportunities. While talent is better, it's still not as deep as the other top schools in the area. This is still basically a brand new program. They still need that first big win to get the monkey off their back.

I would have agreed a few years ago when they first put this offensive system in. However after seeing their team the last two years, I do believe they have the players now to start running a different offense such as a spread. They seem to have a solid line, and very good skill players. They just will need to develop their QB's to do it. Its not surprising the two best teams they played this year, their offense didn't do much. So for them to get over that hump, that offense probably would need to change some.

Yes, I believe Cooper is no worse than a 2 if they beat Grant. Cooper needs Scott to beat Conner in order to have a chance to win the district, and then will likely need South to lose their final game AND beat Dixie in order to win the District. Pretty tall order. If Grant beats Cooper, then I'll leave it to the really smart people to figure things out.

I may be wrong however if Scott beats Conner then that does not help Cooper in terms of getting a one seed. In fact if Scott beats Conner then that will lock up the 1 seed for South Oldham. There wouldn't be a three way tie now, and so South Oldham would get the one since they beat Cooper. It actually makes it very simple if Scott beats Conner, because that will lock everyone into their seeds. The tiebreaker and the last game of the regular season only comes into play if Conner beats Scott.

1. South Oldham

2. Cooper

3. Scott

4. Conner

As far as I know they are. I know there were some issues for next year, and they were petitioning to either move up to 6A or play as an independent as their new district in 5A will be them, Highlands, Cov Cath, and Dixie.

Either way it goes it will be a laugher. . This year was supposed to be the year they were ready to compete- 1-6-1 with the lone win coming against Owen Co. Who hasn't won a game this year. They have 3 to 4 decent players but you can't win with 4 on 11. They have little to no support from the school system, the community or the student body. The whole football program from the youth level, to the middle school, is in shambles. Each program does not care to work the other to prepare these kids for the next level. The youth program down there is a a joke with no direction or continuity. The middle school mocks the youth program and the coach has said he doesn't care what they(youth) or the high school programs do because it's his team. Sound like a recipe for success? They just can't seem to get it through their thick heads and ego's that you build a winning program from the bottom up. I think the high school head coach has had to "settle" for the quality of assistant coaches he has because no one wants to go down there. So even though I'm not a big fan of the coach, I can sympathize with him.. He doesn't have a fighting chance. I hate to say it coach but I told you so....

That's correct. I knew that and still said it wrong. Cooper needs Conner to win, then they need to beat Dixie, and for South Oldham to lose to Bullit to have a chance to be the 1 seed. Even then, I'm not sure it can work out for them.

All three teams have really tough final games, and probable losses. Cooper plays Dixie, South plays an undefeated Bullit Central, and Conner plays Cov Cath. I think all 3 teams lose, but South has the best chance of winning. Conners only win will be against Holy Cross, who will likely end up with just one win. They are pretty much locked in as the three if they beat Scott. South has the advantage in the tiebreaker over Cooper as well in the case that both South and Cooper win, or if they both lose their final game. The only way Cooper can win the district in a three way tie, is if South Oldham loses their final game, and Cooper beats Dixie. If Scott beats Conner, Cooper wins, as they own the head to head versus South, South gets the two, Scott the Three. This is all assuming Cooper takes care of business against Grant.

That is not right. Doesn't mayter the last game. The only way the last game matters is in a tie breaker. District seedings is decided by district games only unless there is a tie. If there is a tie with 3 or more teams then you count the wins of teams you beat etc.

So so the last game of the season doesn't matter except for tie breakers.

Correct. If Conner beats Scott, the tiebreaker comes into play. Which is what I was trying to describe in that post. The only scenario I'm describing in that post is the 3 way tie scenario. If Scott beats Conner, none of that matters, as South wins outright based on their head to head win over Cooper.

Owen has won a game. It might be just one but they have won a game. The youth is going through a restructuring. The middle school isn't in shambles. They play in a fairly tough conference. I also doubt the ms coach said what you said. Did you hear him say that directly?

Some of the HS players have played for three different HC in their 4 years. Each ran a different system and even the HC now is running a different system then what he started with. There has been aarge turnover in assistant coaches. Due to location you are t going to get many parapros. As a whole they've been playing better ball then they had.

Dixiefan1 brought up some valid points. The attitude towards football in Grant county is the main reason why football has and will continue to struggle in Grant county. There is a serious disconnect between the Boosters and the high school team. The boosters won't give any money to the high school because the boosters believe not enough high school parents are working bingo, which is the main money maker for the boosters. There are 2 people with voting rights that have a child in the high school program. The other 6-8 people do not have any kids at any level playing football and 1 other member has a child in the youth league. High school parents do not want to work bingo because most of them believe the boosters are not being run by honest people. There are no checks and balances when it comes to the boosters financial books. The boosters determine who coaches in the youth league, even though there is a youth league board of directors. The boosters support the youth league but only if the boosters get to have the final determination in youth league matters. The youth league, which is run by the boosters, play their games on school property. The district should have told the boosters to fund the high school football program or the youth league would not be allowed on school property for practices or games. This may have hurt the youth in the county but I believe it would either bring both sides to the table or force a change in the leadership within the booster organization. Most successful teams come in on Saturdays to watch the previous night's game film but in Grant county the parents will not bring their child because they believe it is not necessary. Cheerleaders do not attend away games and they do not cheer for home JV games. The school truly does not know what it means to support their football program. Little things like not having cheerleaders for away varsity games and home JV games show that the school really doesn't know what it means to support the team. The football field was built poorly years ago which causes it to drain improperly. Artificial turf is needed not only for football but all sports and activities would benefit from the turf. I believe when Grant county moves into the new district Highlands, Cov Cath, and Dixie Heights it will hurt the program. The numbers of kids participating will decline and the interest in football will shrink even more. Going independent would have allowed a better record and confidence could have been built, which is necessary to build a winning program. Some say that by going independent would admit failure but when you are trying to build a program it is about confidence and high participation rate. I hope they can turn it around in Grant county but it is going to take people in power to make tough decisions.

I went to respond to a newer post but it appears it was deleted. So if I am off I am sorry since I do not have the post to reference.

The current HC did not run The System. Coach Arvin ran The System/TFS and it was the only offense he had ever coached in. He is currently the OC at Ryle. The current HC though was not a System client nor did he run it. He ran a spread offense but many HS do and are not TFS schools. TFS schools have some tell tell signs to them. Just like NZone clients like Male have some common things that makes them a little different than the other spread teams. The current players ran the spread last year, the wing-t during the spring and now an I based offense. That is three different offenses in a little over a year. They have run two different defenses in two years.

The last few years due to HC changes and assistant coaching changes the offseason program has had some issues. This has put a number of players behind when it comes to weight training and over all attendance during the offseason programs. They have lost a few players due to students moving and some just not being interested in playing ball any more.

They have improved from the last few years. The record might not show it but the tape of the last few years does. I've watched a good deal of film on Hudl the last few years. They have played two of their three district games well this year. The Scott game got out of hand in the second half. That is due to putting the ball on the ground five times on QB/Center exchanges. They moved the ball well and defensively they were in position to make plays. The upside of getting to watch film of a lot of different schools is you get to see what really is going on and not what is just perceived as what is going on.

The former MS HC moved up and became the HS OC this year. From my understanding the HS and MS run fairly close to the same offense. They both run power, counter, down, trap, fly, hitch, slant, fade, and boot. I've watched them both play and the window dressing might be a little different their are similarities. When Siple first came to Grant the MS switched to a 4-5 wide offense to match the HS.

I know the MS HC pretty well. I will just respectfully say that you never heard anything as far as not caring about the HS or the youth directly from him. I wonder how many conversations you have had with him or how often you have honestly been around him. The MS program for better or worse has been the most stable of the three programs for about fifteen years or so. From my understanding the HS and MS are more aligned then they ever had even though there have been a number attempts.

The youth program has had issues due to a common problem in youth sports. Finding and keeping quality coaches. It doesn't matter what sport or where it is a pretty common problem. Some people get into coaching youth sports for the right reasons. Some get into it for the wrong. The level of knowledge will vary a good deal also. From what I understand they have already been taking measures over the last few weeks to lay the ground work for changing some things for the future.

As far as some other things brought up by other posters

Cheerleaders at JV games. I would be surprised that other schools have cheerleaders at JV games and I would be surprised if the players cared either way. Cheerleaders, marching band and a number of other things honestly just don't matter to players. They play the game because they love the game. You could play the game in a parking lot for all they care. There is also a issue I believe when it comes to cheering. The cheerleaders must cheer for an equal amount for male and female games in many places. I am not sure if that is the case with Grant but if it is then it makes things tough.

Grant also use to be in the HHS, Cov Cath district. It was rough in spots but the overall numbers didn't decline.

Grant has always appeared to view themselves as a basketball county. That has had an impact getting athletes and sharing athletes. It also explains a number of other things like attendance and other things.

Either way they played well until they stumbled late in the game. There have been enough good things that they should be able to find some drive to work hard in the offseason. So they will be able to finish instead of stumbling at the end.

I only brought up the cheerleader issue because it is a sign of support by the school. I have been to many JV and Varsity games and the home team always had JV cheerleaders and every away Varsity team also had cheerleaders. If you want to make Friday nights special then that means cheerleaders and bands at every game, even if it is a spirit band for away games. I know the difficulties with this because of band competitions on Saturdays but where there is a will there is a way. If you have seen games in Texas and other parts of the country you would see how a school truly supports a football team. It takes effort which at this time the school or community are not willing to make.

I agree with a lot of what you say (except for calling me a liar),But whatever. As far as your comment about the youth program, I would submit to you that last year at least on 2 of the levels they had quality coaches in place. The problem is not finding them in this case, the problem was the "good olé boy" stuff down there. They don't take too kindly to outsiders coming in and taking things over unless they conform to the "program". Why do you think there are problems with the HS and the boosters? Cuz coach won't conform. I could go on and on but frankly I'm tired of thinking about it. I stand by my previous comments.

I believe this is a true statement, but this sort of ideology is prevalent throughout that county and not only concerning football.
