3A South Warren Stands Above the Rest

Featured Replies

No One and by No One I mean NO ONE on this Forum thought Etown was mediocre or BAD team before SW played them... As a matter of fact, everyone was saying that if South beats them, they are as good as I say. Why now the change in tone? Is Etown no longer a good team because they got blown out by South Warren, or is South Warren just THAT GOOD?!

Etown has beaten:

Ft Knox 0-5

Edmonson Co 2-3

Washington Co 0-4

Breckinridge Co 0-5

A combined 2-17. Hard to really tell how good Etown is this year.

I must say this: I was wrong about South. They are the best team in 3A and should win it.

E'town's schedule is about to get tougher:

at Bullitt Central (4-0) ... BC's Carnell is among state leaders in rushing yards

at Louisville Central (3-2) ... Records mean nothing to the Jackets, as they never went undefeated in any of their title runs, IIRC

at LaRue County (1-3) ... LC led in fourth quarter in 2-of-3 losses

Henry County (4-1) ... EHS lost at Henry last year

Glasgow (4-1) ... EHS lost to Glasgow last year and some thing Trigg is among state's best RBs (he's committed to WKU, IIRC)

Everybody jumped on the South Warren train last year and got derailed. They were much better last year. It's a shame that they play a bad 1A schedule and have 5A numbers. Nobody knows how good they are until the playoffs. I wouldn't reward them anything until they prove they deserve it.

No One and by No One I mean NO ONE said Etown was a really good team before South Warren played them. Everyone on here came to the consensus it would be a chance for SW to further validate themselves...but I am fairly sure everyone took that game at face value.

There is no doubt SW has justified themselves as a Top 5 team in 3A, but there is also no doubt that their resume and weak schedule lends itself to bringing in serious doubt into how good SW really is.

Here is a snapshot using Calpreps' CPU rankings

South Warren has played:

5958

6409

6817

12888

13587

An average ranking of: 9131.80

An Average Final Score of: 40.2- 6

Belfry has played:

1018

1595

3107

5966

An Average Ranking of: 2921.5

An Average Score of: 28.8- 13.5

Every team Belfry has played thusfar is ranked essentially equal or higher than SW's best win of the season.... of the Top 12 teams in their 3A rankings SW's SOS is 2nd to last.

You just sound like a typical hater... We will also see how good the purples are next year when they have to actually play somebody to win a State Championship.

This is the most valid argument I have seen made... I could see placing them at #2 behind Belfry after your LOGICAL analysis.

DT, you are actually going to play this card after playing Hart County this week and saying your #1 in the State.

Right now I think Belfry, South Warren, Central, Bourbon County, and Corbin are all pretty much a toss-up.

I can definitely see the case for SW as #2...but I could also see arguing they should be #5 out of that group... it also is reasonable to say they have a claim at #1 since they are the only undefeated team of that group.

Entering this week it was Belfry...then everyone else... Friday proved that as of right now no team in 3A really stands out above the rest after all.

People were ready to hand the hardware to Belfry but now it is very clear 3A is wide open.

I still think Belfry has the edge over everyone as #1 because of who they have defeated. Corbin and Southwestern came to the wire and Belfry physically manhandled them. Central has "Good Losses" but haven't beat great teams. Bourbon's loss to Warren Central isn;t a bad loss, but it isn't a good loss.

You are spot on...with BG's cupcake schedule that has included St. X, Blackman, McCallie, Lex. Cath, Warren Central, John Hardin, Christian Co., Owensboro, and Henry Clay over the past three years, there is little doubt that the Purples will be shocked and awed by the introduction of Highlands and Cov. Cath's overwhelming size, speed, and coaching in 2015 and beyond...

South's schedule is weak there is no argument about that. What I find a little interesting is that most people thought that South would be at least 5 and 5 and no better than 7 and 3 this year. A lot of that was based on what all they lost. Most thought they would win against Logan, Hart County, Edmonson County, Adair County, and possibly win against Greenwood and Daviess County, They thought they would struggle with Warren East, E-town and would loose to Monroe and Russellville. Again that was at the beginning of the season. As the season has went along South has asserted their defense once again as one of the best in the state only allowing an average of 6 points per game. Yes that's a bit more than the numbers last year but not much. According to Zack Greenwell of Bowling Green Daily News going back to Oct. 26, 2012 South has allowed more than 8 points a game just 3 times in the 22 games.

So they are defensively strong. But the question I still have is there schedule. Granted 4 of the teams on their schedule they have to play. (Monroe, Adair, Hart and Edmonson) the other 6 games were decided on by the school administration. I know Nelson explained that he tried to schedule Greenwood and Logan County in this two year cycle because he thought they were going to 5 A. He also tried to keep it to where they could learn to win etc.

When you go back and look at when they first opened they were terrible they were not competitive. After that first season I don't think anyone thought they would be as competitive as they are now this fast. I didn't think that this team could even come close to matching last years success on the field but they have.

The question is if the West is as bad as everyone says it is are they going to even have a challenge till they get to the 3rd of 4th round of the playoffs. At that point it will be probably Paducah Tilghman or Louisville Central.

I think the thing is South is one of the better 3 A teams and when they are realigned next year to 4A and the district schedule will be better next year then we will really know where they stand as a program. But as for where they are this year they are one of the top 4 or 5 teams in 3a and where that should be I don't think there is a lot of separation in those teams right now. I am talking about Belfry, Louisville Central, Bell, and South as well as a couple of others.

JC, this is reasonable. My concern for South is not getting into the playoffs and going far; it is getting into a tight game and not having any experience for your players to pull from to come through that. I think they can challenge to the State Semi-Finals and then we'll see. Also Russellville will not roll over for them. I have my eye on that game.

I think you may be right about Russellville. They beat Logan by virtually the same score and Logan is horrible and not a good comparison. I feel south is a lot better than a lot of people give the credit for because of their schedule. I think it is really really hard to judge how good they are because of the schedule and where they were placed by KHSAA. They are still a young team with some inexperience and still learning how to play. When they have a close game we will see how they handle it.

Agree JC. All you can do is win the games on your schedule. The tougher games will come, but until then hard to bend opinions with only words.

You are absolutely correct. Win the games on their schedule and in the playoffs then they can brag some. I know and have stated before KHSAA gave South a gift by classing them in 3A and slowly moving them up. Its not the kids fault that they were classed there.

For them to get respect they have to win. Where they are classed they have an opportunity to win and gain some respect and as they move up they have the opportunity as a team to gain confidence as they move closer to where they should be classed.
