CovCath/Campbell County Scrimmage

Featured Replies

It was 28-14 at the end of 3. 2nd string came in for the 4th. Cov. Cath opened the game by running the opening kickoff back for a TD. Camels came back and scored. Camels fumbled the opening kickoff to start the 3rd, giving Cov. Cath great field position, and an easy score.

42-14 final.

No clue who scored when though so score alone might not be a good indicator of what 1s v. 1s looked like.

Game started out with a 90 yard kick off return by Jake Erpenbeck. Took off to the right, made one cut and gone- no one catching him from behind.

Camels came right back on the ensuing possession and drove it down using a nice mix of run and pass- capped off with a pretty long QB power run off the right side for six.

Went back and forth for several possessions with nothing to show for either when in the 2nd quarter, Adam Wagner found Rensing over the middle for a 25 yard TD pass.

On the ensuing kick off, Campbell Co fumbles and Cov Cath has a short field- a few runs and passes later, Darlington takes it in from the 5 yard line.

Campbell comes back and scores and my apologies as I can't recall the circumstances.

Cov Cath then answers with a long sustained drive of their own with a nice run vs pass mix. Wagner has a nice run off the left side- Darlington has a nice burst off the right, and finally Darlington takes it in from @ the 3.

At this point the JV's for both teams come in @ the 4th quarter. Hentz does a nice job on his passing game and on the zone reads. Tony ends up running it in twice from @ 5-10 yards out to close the scoring.

Final score Cov Cath 42- Campbell Co 14

Some observations-

Campbell Co.

This team will give people trouble. Large and physical up front- though not terribly athletic overall IMO. New QB has a nice arm- gets it out with zip.

Defensively, they had a rough time staying disciplined on zone reads. I suspect this is a team that will fix these things and get better and better as the year goes on.

Cov Cath

I thought the O Line controlled the LOS in this game which is a great sign. Never had any negative yardage. Wagner did a great job on zone reads- once he gets thru a gap or on the edge, he is quick quick quick. Not going to bowl anyone over, but slippery strong. Darlington ran very tough and is a physical blocker- making nice cuts at the LOS to get every possible yard. Made a nice long run off tackle to help set up a score. The passing game will need to improve. Wasn't poor by a long shot but timing was a little off. The presence of several state championship level speedsters and a game or two under their belts will get this fixed.

Defensively they looked pretty good although more discipline is needed in the secondary IMO - but a coachable issue. Fast athletic D line and the same with LB's.

Kicking game is already 100% better with Hornsby handling PAT's and field goals.

Overall, both teams were flying around and you could tell they were both eager to start hitting someone besides themselves. Good luck to Campbell Co this year.

So is Wagner going to be the guy at QB or was it never in doubt?

Some positives and negatives for both teams. But overall a good scrimmage. Cov Cath was pretty generous with there substitutions, a lot of underclassmen got some reps in the varsity portion. CCH was pretty conservative with their play calling, looking like they did not want to show much. I don't think they ever threw it more than 10-15 yards down field. They probably ran it through the 3 or 4 hole with the QB or RB a good portion of the time. I would have liked to see Wagner get a chance to air it out but understand not wanting to show it.

Campbell County came out swinging even after Erpenbeck took the opening kick off to the house basically untouched to start of the time. Campbell responded well with a nice TD drive that was scored by a good run of the QB. The kid looked pretty good on the night. The Camels were flying around and laying some good hits. The Camels were showing their fellow players some love when ever they made a play, it was a quick reminder why high school football is so great. The Campbell receivers did a nice job of settling into holes and the QB did a good job getting it there. The QB missed a couple and the WRs dropped a couple but overall a good showing. The Camels had some big boys and a couple speedy backs who will make some good plays this year.

Campbell responded nicely to a couple CCH scores but it seemed that CovCath wore them down. By mid 2nd quarter CCH oline and dline were winning the LOS battle the majority of the time. I think it was said above but the Campbell secondary probably needs to do a better job. CCH receivers were usually open especially when the ran combo routes with each other. One WR seemed to be always open by a lot. This was the problem with the Campbell D the past few times CCH played them, they could not stop the CCH WRs from getting behind them. The Campbell safeties were not playing deep and were staying up to help with the run. I really thought CCH could have exploited this if they really wanted to.

The CCH D did a good job of flying to the ball but at time did a poor job of hitting and driving. At the same time the Camel players did a great job of lowering their shoulder and driving their legs. Churned out a few extra 1st downs by doing this.

The JV portion was all Cov Cath. The JV CCH QB did a really good job of staying in the pocket and delivering a nice throw nearly every time. The JV colonels D was flying around and making some nice hits.

Wagner - but Dressman got a lot of time at QB- and had a couple plays from the slot and RB.

There was also a series where Campbell Co threw a nice fade pass and got it down to @ the 3 yard line. The Cov Cath D stiffened up tremendously at that point and Campbell basically lost yardage on the next three plays- settling for a FG attempt that went wide left. Thought the D showed some great mental and physical toughness on that series.

Excellent post. Thanks for the analysis! Good luck to both teams this season!

My impression is it's been him as long as health wasn't an issue.
