Covington Catholic Colonels 2014 Football Preview

^^^^Wirth had a lot of good things to say about Schrand when I asked about him off camera.

I've had the chance to meet Max and be around him a bit. Catcher on the baseball team. Catcher/bulldog - tough kid. Got a little bit of a fire in his rear end.

I look forward to seeing him light some people up.

Sophs sometimes take a bit. Therefore, despite the number of good receivers Dave has at his disposal, I wouldn't be surprised to see the kid get some regular run at some point. Good athlete with good size.

I guess I should have included "the kid's" name. I was referring to Angel.

Coach Wirth has done a fine job at CCHS. Nothing but respect to him and their program from all of us at JC. Wishing you all continued success and hopefully an injury free season.

When did he coach at Campbell County?

Sorry, never gets old.:p

Great day for a scrimmage. The results I wanted. Got out of the house and watched some football. Good plays made on both sides of the ball. The seniors seem to be filling some of the holes left by last years graduations well enough. Some underclassmen stepped in and had some nice plays, Shelton and Best were the two I caught names on their plays.

Best part of all. The Colonels are as healthy after the game as when they were before it started.

Go Colonels.

Anybody catch the scrimmage?

As with all scrimmages, some good some not so good. This was an intra squad scrimmage so both sides knew exactly what to expect- which has its pros and cons obviously depending on what side of the ball your watching.

The not so good on O:

- had a couple too many turnovers, whether on tipped balls or otherwise.

- couple break downs in Pass Pro on sprint outs that led to rushed passes

- couple silly mistakes overall which will get coached up and cleaned up

The good on O:

- overall pocket protection was very good IMO

- O line got a real good push on run downs- always positive yardage on runs

- Darlington had good hard yards and some very nice cuts into the hole. Thought that was a strength- also blocked well.

- McDowell and McGinness are very elusive in open space- great YAC. Speedy group of WR's.

Dressman still coming along after having a lot of down time this past season from his injury. Used in different spots- at RB as well as QB and inside slot receiver similar to brother Sam. Much better thrower than Sam though. Wagner looked good, still plenty of ceiling to hit. Very fast- can take off in a heartbeat. May see him split out wide too for a different look.

Not so good on D:

- had a few guys on the D line that were out today, so not as strong a showing in this scrimmage as I had hoped.

- as quick as the WR's are, I guess the flip of that coin is that the DB's will need to break down and tackle a little better in the open field

The good on D:

- Alex Wagner. This kid played like a stud today. All out every play and it paid off with a fumble recovery off a scoop and an interception off a tipped pass. Also put pressure in the backfield off the edge. Very noticeable player today I thought.

- everyone was flying around. Very opportunistic defense.

- thought new DB's did a fine job in coverage often times forcing Wagner to pull and run.

Thought Tony Hentz at QB showed his arm well when the JV's took the field. He looks more confident which is a good thing.

So overall, it was was it was- a learning experience that will be used as a building block.

I was unfortunalely stuck at work and couldn't get home in time. Glad to here the positives for both sides. Also, really appreciate the post Bluedad. How was OL and LB play?

Thought the O Line won the battle today- always got positive yards rushing and did a good job in Pass Pro. This surprised me just a little considering all the new faces on that side of the ball. But again, the D line was holding several guys out to mend before next Fridays scrimmage with Campbell Co. Tyler Conrad does a fantastic job getting the O line together.

Didn't notice the LB's a lot today. But Alex Wagner was flying around so much from different spots on the field that they were overshadowed IMO. Pitzer, Sammons and Shelton started out I believe, but others rotated in.

Coach Conrad has done a great job ever since he has come to CCH.

Which Dressman was the kicker also? Was he the one that graduated last year? I thought he had a DI leg when he was a freshman. Did he just stop kicking all together?

Sam handled kick offs last year. Not sure who will do it this year, although Ben can and has in the past. My guess is Hornsby will handle this along with PAT's. Foertsch returns as the punter and he's a good one- although Angel punts very well. Either Timmerman or Shelton on long snaps.

No Special Teams in today's scrimmage.

I thought for sure if Sam concentrated on kicking he would have been a DI kicker for sure. When he was a freshman he would kick it out if the endZone more times than not.

When is the next scrimmage and who is the opponent?
