I think he's trying to say it was more motivated by financial concerns than religious freedoms and the religious freedoms was a convenient argument to make if you wanted to save a few bucks.

I think they were talking about the lawsuit HL filed not being motivated by financial reasons. It wasn't. Compared to all the extra costs HL incurs in taking extra care of it's employees, the cost of adding those 4 procedures to it's health insurance was small. However, in reading his point about being closed on Sundays it's obvious that the religious motivation in their decisions far exceeds the financial one as Sunday is a huge day for retail, second only to Saturday last time I saw any figures.
