2013 Review: The 2013 season was disappointing for the Shamrocks. The opener resulted in a 1-point loss to Ensworth on ESPNU. This defeat removed some confidence from Trinity squad. Although the Rocks rebounded with a 7-point win over Carmel. Trinity followed with a unexpected 4-point loss at Lawrence Central The remaining positive outcomes included wins over Cathedral, Manual (twice), and Eastern. The highlight of the season was the seventh consecutive victory over archrival St. Xavier. This extended Trinity’s lead in the series to two (all-time 38-36-2). Male beat Trinity twice. The latter ended the Shamrocks season in the state quarterfinals. This marked the second time these rivals met twice in a season. The other occurred in 1996 and resulted in a sweep by the Rocks. Trinity finished the 2013 campaign 6-6, their worst mark since 1995. The Shamrocks failed to reach the state title game for only the second time in the Bob Beatty era. Coach Beatty is 10-2 in his fourteen completed seasons.

A closer look at 2013 statistics revealed the Rocks defense yielded 2,073 yards rushing and 2,287 yards passing in twelve games. The offense gained 2,038 yards running the ball and 2,673 yards through the air. Turnovers favored the Rocks 20-16. These included 9 interceptions and 7 lost fumbles by the Rocks. Trinity picked off 4 passes and recovered 16 fumbles. The Rocks allowed 27.6 points per game and scored 28.7 and recorded 40 more first downs. Nearly 88,000 spectators watched Trinity perform in 2013.

Players to watch: Senior Class President Ryan Young is the leader at quarterback. He led the junior varsity to an undefeated (8-0) season in 2013. Young appeared in 5 varsity games and rushed for 30 yards on 5 attempts. He completed 8 of 12 passes with one interception and one touchdown. Senior Donald Brooks moves to slot receiver in 2014. Brooks gained 880 yards on 195 carries and scored 14 rushing TDs in ’13. Brooks also caught 32 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. Junior Jailen Reed takes over at tailback after gaining 184 yards on 25 rushing attempts with 4 touchdowns. Reed also caught 2 passes for 20 yards. Junior Rodjay Burns will lead the wide receivers. He recorded 40 receptions for 678 yards and 4 touchdowns last season. Twin sophomores Jovel and Jovan Smith will give the Shamrocks additional punch at the receiver and running back. Larry Harper III is the back up QB for the varsity. Both lines will expect to major contributions from members of the Class of 2017. The defense will be led by Junior middle linebacker Damon Lowe. Lowe recorded a team high 52 solo tackles. He had two assists with 9 tackles for loss. Junior Connor Foos (DL) led Trinity with 10 tackles for loss in 2013. Foos was credited with 36 solo tackles and 3 fumble recoveries. Senior Alex Reisert (DB) made 51 solo tackles, three assists, with 6 tackles for loss. Senior Canon Jackson (DB) made one interception, 37 solo tackles, 7 assists, and recovered 3 fumbles.

2014 Preview: The upcoming season will be another strong challenge for Trinity. Games with Ensworth (TN), Cocoa (FL), Imhotep (Philadelphia, PA), Colerain (OH), Carmel (IN), Cathedral (IN) Moeller (OH) and three district foes (Male, Manual, & St. Xavier) will test the Shamrocks and their five new staff members. Newcomers include defensive coordinator Jay Cobb. He is the former head coach at Somerset and most recently, retired from Beaumont, Texas school system. Coach Cobb will also take care of the cornerbacks. Mike Fox joins the staff and will coach outside linebackers. Long time Louisville area coach Rob Piercy moves up to varsity and will coach tight ends and running backs. Coach Piercy worked at Male & Jeffersonville just prior to arriving at Trinity. Nathan Leslie moves over from Ballard and will coach the defensive line. Chad Carpenter comes to Trinity from the Chicago area and will coach inside linebackers. These gentlemen join holdovers Andrew Coverdale (OC), Oscar Brohm (QB), Gary Owens (WR), Tom Fox(OL), Pat Newman (OL) and Devian Logan (Safeties). Bill Cubbage remains the head athletic trainer for the Shamrocks.

The majority of Trinity’s opponents will be tough tests for the Rocks. Dallas Jackson, formerly of Rivals100.com, and current leader of NationalHSFootball.com, predicts the Shamrocks will be no better than 50/50 to win 9 of their ten games in the regular season. This prognosticator has Trinity rated number three in the state behind Male and Scott County. This is the final season for the “Super District” with Manual, Male, and St. Xavier. Trinity’s district four will host district one in the first round of the playoffs. The survivor will most likely travel to Georgetown the day after Thanksgiving to take on the defending State Champions, the Scott County Cardinals. A trip to Bowling Green on December 6 awaits the winner. Expectations at Trinity always include winning the state championship in football. The Rocks will do everything possible to prepare for the 5 game post season winning streak needed to earn their 23rd State Championship trophy.

Green-White game is scheduled for 7PM Friday August 8. If it is too hot, the Rocks will battle at 9AM Saturday morning. The scrimmage will conclude in plenty of time to allow attendees the chance to visit the St. Joseph's Children's Home Picnic!!!!!

How many returning starters for Trinity?

WDRB had a report on Trintity a few weeks back. I wasn't watching that closely, but I think they said 18 or 19. Don't know if they meant starters or players that saw time on the field. Last year we basically fielded a JV team ( except for a few like Bonnafon) that played a varsity schedule. Hoping for some big improvement this year.

I am expecting some Sophomores to take a few spots on offense and defense. Only one defensive starter graduated. I believe 7 offensive starters return. After 6-6, it is good news or bad news 17 of 22 return.

Any word on size of the freshman team?

I'm hearing about 80.

Coach Beatty stated that tonight. We must have had a few absentees at the Team Picnic as I counted 65 bodies that introduced themselves. Coach Beatty also stated 110-115 Soph. Juniors and Seniors at tonight's gathering that included your Pop. :-)

Listening to Coach Beatty talk about the Class of 2018, I believe he will be at Trinity for the next several years. He is upbeat and appreciates where he is and those that he works with and for at Trinity.

Is it just me or with T be playing several guys at key positions with very little experience? If the comment above is accurate about the V being more like a JV team, shouldn't those guys have played a ton last year?

Didn't cause too many problems in 2010 with mostly underclassmen.

Sure it didn't. Just wondering if it could cause issues this year, as it did last year or if those guys were as talented as the 2013 class.

Since Beatty had been there there have only been two truly "disappointing" seasons. 2004 and 2013. Both of which came after some of the best talent the school has ever had. 05-08 they won titles with many new faces regularly. I am not very worried. Usually the shock of a season like last year or 2004 shakes the complacency out of the next group.
