True but these weren't kill missions where he was sent to kill an individual that wasn't on the battle field. He was killing targets of opportunity that displayed intent to attack US Forces.

 

Carlos Hathcock, possibly the greatest US Sniper ever did take on a specific kill mission during his first tour in Vietnam. He was given an unmarked topographical map and then flown to an unknown LZ (Laos, Cambodia or North Vietnam), then then spent three days crawling across a field to get within range to kill a VC General inside his compound.

Bad mission assignment if it was not specifically stated to take out just the the threat or if surrounding casualties are acceptable.

 

Exactly. What is the ROE on it? Of course the first thing I thought of was The Professional. No women. No children. Heck even Scarface had an issue blowing up a car with a kid in it.

 

As far as people saying take a sniper shot goes. There is more risk there than a ED. With a car bomb you have no idea how it was set off. With a sniper shot they know you're in the area. They would know the general direction due to the sound. I'm not sure about a muzzle flash.

I'd guess these guys have Eagle Eyes, but today's optics are insane too.

 

At 1500 yards you'd have to aim over 1000 inches above the target to hit it of course that is done by adjusting the scope. At 2100 yards there would be around 2500 inches of drop in the bullet. These guys not only have to have nerves of steel and eyes like an Eagle but have to know and figure out Trigonometry like a college professor.

It's less about eyesight and steadiness and more about being a physicist with a rifle. Judging the effects of distance, gravity, air quality, wind speed and direction.

I couldn't do it to the child, now if it were he and the wife that's a different story.
