I don't remember the details but I think most of the defensive breakdowns last season dealt more with having to play superior, much faster athletes more so than break downs in the defensive system. That's it exactly. Kentucky was overmatched at almost every position last season. Louisville also had some serious players at a lot of positions. Still, he had a great gameplan against Louisville really frustrated the receivers, especially in the first half.

July 30, 201412 yr This one is awesome too: 22 seconds into the game Jeff Brohm completes one to Ralph Dawkins who goes 80 yards for the score... and then David Akers knocks through the extra point. It also features one of my favorite Cardinals from when I was a kid: offensive lineman Roman Oben, who would go on to a 12-year NFL career. He was a two-sport athlete who also lettered three years in track and field, finishing (I believe) second in the shotput at the Metro Conference Championships his senior year. Earned his degree in Economics from UofL and took graduate classes during summers while in the NFL and eventually got his masters degree. Served as a team rep to the NFLPA for seven seasons. Cool dude. Now a broadcaster with the Giants. Oh, and the Cardinals PUMMELED Texas 41-10. Schnellenberger was the man. What is found most incredible was that was 20 years ago and wide receivers still played with their hand on the ground. In my mind 1993 wasn't that long ago. But watching that film it might has well have been 200 years ago. How the game, media, everything has changed.
August 6, 201412 yr Author It's amazing watching some of these old games on YouTube. Old Cardinal Stadium really was a dump... even then. Now I read this morning that Louisville has sold in excess of 49,000 season tickets... that's more than the entire capacity of Cardinal Stadium before the 2010 expansion. It's been a fun two decades.

PJCS will be rowdy this year. I can't wait. I just wish we could have had one season of Teddy and Bobby. Man, talk about exciting.

I didn't have season tickets back then. It was my first fall back in Louisville after graduating from college and I hunted for tickets for three weeks and finally managed to get a pair for me and my brother. Worth every penny.
August 6, 201412 yr Author Ye gods... I have it. I was listening to this one on the radio coming to Louisville for the weekend from Dayton. I got home just as overtime started. The Trinity/St. X football game was the next night and all I can remember was watching the celebration at the end and thinking "Oh no, what are they going to do about the goalposts for tomorrow?" Hah.
August 6, 201412 yr Some of those beat downs by UofL really do bring back those days when everyone, UK fans or not, were trashing Mitch Barnhart for not firing Rich Brooks. I do have to give Barnhart credit for having the foresight to give Brooks more time to recover and build a decent program. Granted, Mitch lost much of that credibility when he offered Joker the coach in waiting position, LOL. Oh well, hopefully Stoops can start building again. I'm not one of the fans who expect SEC titles, I just want a day to come where teams like Tenn, So Carolina and Georgia cannot just assume W's automatically when playing Kentucky and if they do beat KY, it is by a TD or so, not numerous TD's. Brooks was knocking on that door but not quite there. I remember being pretty much the only one on BGP who defended Brooks.
