Mike Brown on Dalton Contract

Featured Replies

You call it too smart, we call it he knows he isn't good enough to sign it. Dude is gonna grab every last penny before he gets the boot and I don't blame him from a business perspective.

Let's not kid ourselves. If Dalton doesn't sign it, and the Bengals go another direction, he's going to be a very highly paid QB somewhere else.

Shh!! :sssh:

If you aren't careful you're going to join me in the "pro Dalton" camp that is so roundly mocked 'round these parts.

I think most recognize that he's done well for a second round pick, shoot even for a first round pick he would be ok compared to recent history. They're just frustrated at the inability to win in the playoffs, we all are.

He has had the 3rd best start ever, for a guy drafted anywhere, so I'd say he has done okay. Of course, everyone wants him / them to be better in big games and in the playoffs...obviously. I just think too many people are wanting to throw the baby out with the bath water on this one.

You want to bet none of this year's crop of rookies, that everyone was clamoring for, mind you, won't come close to his 1st 3 years in the league? His career is still in its infancy, that is what is forgotten so quickly.

I just have to avoid my friend Hellbird from ever talking about CovCath or Andy Dalton, on most other topics he is level-headed, funny, and bright. :sssh: :bunny:

That may be a tad bit of an over-statement. He was a 2nd round pick and has had one of the top 3 first three years in NFL history. Bust might be stretching it a bit.

Inability to win the big one? Fair and accurate. Bust? Come on, HB.....

When I say bust I'm referring to how he plays in big games especially post season.

He plays great against avg to below avg teams. It's the very good teams in the league each year he has to step up against.

I think he'd be one of the best backups somewhere. When I look at Dalton the one QB he reminds me most of is Jon Kitna. He's a QB you'd love to have if your starter goes down, but he isn't one that can lead a team from week 1 and go deep In the playoffs with.

He can get you a win here and there and he can beat teams he's supposed to beat, it's just those teams that are among the best that season are the ones that give the most trouble and keep them from getting over that hump.

Problem is not who he's playing, just the consistency. In the regular season he had good games against Chicago, GB and Indy, average games against New Eng and San Diego, and horrible games against Cleveland, Miami and Baltimore.

I think it was Mo Egger a couple days ago who said there are 4 realistic possibilities with Dalton next season, and I agree completely.

1) Dalton and the Bengals come to a deal before this season and he's a very highly paid starting QB for the Bengals.

2) Dalton and the Bengals don't reach a deal before this season, he exceeds expectations and he's an even higher paid starting QB for the Bengals next season.

3) Dalton and the Bengals can't come to a deal and they use the franchise tag on him, and he's an extremely highly paid starting QB for the Bengals.

4) Dalton and the Bengals decide to part ways after another season without a postseason victory and he's the very highly paid starting QB for another team.

Dalton is entering his 4th year in the league, and has improved every year. It's completely unrealistic to think he's all of a sudden going to suck to the point that he's worse than he's been in any of his previous seasons. He'll be a starting QB in the league next season.

I have to disagree with people who continue to say Dalton has improved every year. I don't see it, if anything he is the same as he was his 1st year.

What he has done each year is threw for more yards and more Td's than the previous season which sounds great until you actually look at the facts. Fact is each year he has attempted more passes than the previous year which should produce more yards and more TD's which is good right? Then you look at the other important stats, he has also thrown more int's each year than his previous season. To put it in perspective, Dalton threw over 60 more passes this past season than he did in his first year and also threw 7 more int's than he did in his first year. Not really an improvement to be proud of.

His int % went from 2.5% in 2011 to 3% in 2012 to 3.4% in 2013 this according to NFL.com

And will prob get cut a few years after. Ala Ryan Fitzpatrick. Dalton is not elite we can't keep pretending he is.

Please show me where anyone has ever said he was?

His quarterback rating has improved each year, hasn't it? Since that's a measure of several different categories I'd say that indicates he's improving. To break your stats down a little more his 60 additional completions were on 70 attempts and resulted in 13 additional touchdowns and 900 yards passing. That's fantastic improvement in any world and something to be very proud of, wouldn't you agree?

Who said he's elite? He's a little above average.

From the training camp bridge...

Let the record show that I did not hang that sign lol

I would agree 110% if it was t followed by that many INTs.

As I said in my post, when you look at his increased yards and TDs it looks good, but the fact he throws more int's also is why I say he's really closer to the same as he was rookie year instead of "improving" every year as some claim.

If he had say even only 13 Ints last year that would mark a big improvement but the fact he basically added another 7 isn't an improvement.
