Beginning of the End for Beer Vendors?

Featured Replies

A buddy passed on this article to me and I thought this might be an appropriate place for it:

MLB All-Star Game to feature self-serve beer machines - ESPN

At $.38 an ounce, that puts 16 ounces at about $6.10 of Bud Light and Budweiser. Beer vendors at GABP sell 16 ounce cans for $8.25. I'm not sure on the price at the current concession stands. I want to say its $9.25 for 20 ounces.

Delaware North, mentioned in the article, runs the vending in Minn., also runs the vending at GABP. With the All-Star game being in Cincy next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see these machines if it goes well this year.

Some interesting thoughts and questions for me, but I'll hold off until others have a chance to read and comment.

Beer is way too expensive at major events. I hate to see that price cut come at the expense of beer vendors.

But it will. No different than the self-checkout line at Kroger or Walmart.

Every time I pay eight dollars for watery Bud or Miller products, I die a little inside.

I might not be reading it right, but it looks like the fan would have to stand in two different lines to buy the beer:

A line where you're going to have to show an ID and put money on your pre-loaded card.

A line to get the beer and show your ID again.

If anything, in my mind that means they need less concession stand workers vs. beer vendors. Concession stand workers are paid hourly vs. beer vendors are paid based on commission.

Beer vendors make a large portion of their money from the tips from the fan anyway. Commission rate is about 8-10% of beer sales, depending on your years of service.

That's how they work in Minnesota. They use the card not only to ID, but it controls how much you're permitted to purchase within a certain amount of time. Some number of ounces per 15 minutes or something like that.

Article said 48 ounces per 15 minutes. Guess it times them out or something.

Sounds like the Ron White bit about being at a Rock Festival and having to stand in line to buy Coupons and then get in another line to turn Coupon in for beer.

I refuse to by any beverage with booze at a sporting event with the prices so freaking high.

Yeah I don't blame you at all and I'm not mad at ya haha!

Before I started working as a beer vendor, I rarely bought beer down there. Now I just don't go to the games as a fan because I'm always working them. But if I did, I would 100% buy my beer from the vendors vs. draft even though I prefer draft.

I agree with you. But when I go to a ballgame, I just HAVE to have at least one beer and a redhot. Its, its baseball etiquette for heaven's sake!!

It's tough to. I usually buy one right at the beginning when I first get there. I rarely buy a second.

However there's nothing like a cold beer from the beer vendor and I did not have to get out of my seat. Of course this means more folks will be hopping in and out of their seats, I hate that.

Growing up and going to games with Grandpa, it was always a Frosty Malt and Peanuts. Now that I'm older, I've traded in to Malt for a brew.
