So hypothetical question: could an 8th grader at St. Paul play FROSH or JV soccer at St. Henry' date=' then enroll at CovCath the following year and play for them (on the corresponding team, FROSH, JV or V, based on his skill) without sitting out? Like the Cole Von Handorf basketball situation? Is that the same for soccer as well?[/quote']

Not so fast . . . the rule is: A student below grade nine (9) may not participate on the varsity team in contests in the sports of football or soccer, and a student enrolled below grade seven (7) may not participate on the varsity level in wrestling.

SO.. in any sport but soccer and football, an 8th grader can start Varsity and play every game (or JV or Frosh) in 8th grade at school "A", then enroll in school "B" and start Varsity as a Freshmen and play every game (or JV or Frosh) without penalty. Why? 1.) Because the student was never enrolled at school "B" in 8th grade 2.) Any playing time on any level before 9th grade does not count towards your 4 years of eligibility.

In soccer and football, an 8th grader would be limited to JV and Frosh only, but could still freely choose a different school for 9th grade and immediately start on Varsity.

It's the same. Except an 8th grader would only play on the freshman team at St.Henry(at least on the boys side), don't remember it happening with the boys, but it has occurred with the girls. From what I hear there are good numbers at tryouts. No notable additions or subtractions with the upperclassmen. I guess everyone will find out tonight where they fall.

Interesting, so said student could play FROSH or JV at SHDHS as an 8th grader at St. Paul, and then go to CovCath and be free to play at whatever level his ability would place him. Thanks Glyde.

He asked about playing Frosh or JV as an 8th grader. As you point out there is no restriction.

Yes, but not exactly the same as CVH at CCH because of different Varsity rules.

Yes, assuming he could make a team at SHDHS and that SHDHS was willing to take the inherent risk that any 8th grader is free to leave. And if it was basketball or baseball he could start Varsity and still switch.

I think you see 8th graders playing Varsity more in girls sports than boys. Softball would be at the top of the list.

Is this a KHSAA rule or a SHDHS rule?

This kind of supports my pet peave........of schools that cut Frosh and other "students" to allow 7 and 8th graders to make the team. If you do not cut anyone, then fine, they play....but if you cut one "student" then you should not keep a "non-student." "Feeder school, or not.

Those are the KHSAA rules - each school may have their own policy per sport.
