Just wondering where was this crew from, were they a crew our just random umpires assigned together.

 

I hate to see or hear of any game decided by a blown call if this was in fact a blown call.

 

Each region sends 1 umpire to the state tournament. Those umpires are then paired in some fashion so they aren't doing games of teams they normally handle.

It was certainly a blown call. And it could have affected the outcome, as it would have resulted in a tie game, and no other runs were scored. It seemed fairly obvious, and I don't know of anyone in the stands that didn't see the ball on the ground. Again, I was sitting right behind 3rd base, and I'm almost positive the third base umpire saw the play.

It was mentioned in another thread. It was the centerfielder, and it was clearly a blown call. The 2nd base umpire couldn't see the drop because the ball ended up on the ground behind the centerfielder. I'm almost positive the 3rd base umpire saw it, but the crew never did anything to make sure they got the call right. That would have tied the game up, and certainly could have changed the outcome of game.

That's what happens when you have two many umpires on the field. Could you imagine doubling the number of refs for basketball playoffs or football playoffs. Lets face it, they are automatically out of position. I believe some tend to make calls or not ask for help to prove their importance to the playoffs. Stick with TWO!

I would say it's much easier to be out of position when there are only two umps. For example, the pickoff play at first is a tough call for the field umpire in a two man crew. Fair/foul is easier to call in four man crew. And there's no doubt close plays at any base are much easier to make when an ump is assigned to just one base. Two man crews cause umpires to have to sometimes make calls from across the field from less than an ideal position. Cost and availability are the main issues that force high school baseball to use two man crews...it's not because two man crews are inherently better. MLB certainly doesn't think 4 is too many,and they go to 6 man crews in the playoff's. More ref's in basketball is not a possibility because of space limitations, but the NFL and college use 7 man crews, 2 more than high school. There are many times in High school football games that an extra ref would help.

No they are using 4 umps. A previous poster had mentioned that they should only use two, and that 4 was too many.
