Albuquerque PD has Pattern of Excessive and Deadly Force

Justice Department Slams Albuquerque PD

In one instance, officers used Tasers on a man who had doused himself in gasoline, setting him on fire and endangering everyone in his vicinity.

The 19-year-old, Andrew Lopez, caught Albuquerque police officers' attention while driving with dim headlights and no taillights; when police tried to pull him over, he led them on a low-speed chase before parking and taking off on foot, the report said.

Five officers gave chase, and when Lopez reached a fence and began to turn around, one of the officers fired three times, hitting Lopez once. The nonlethal shot put Lopez on his back, the report said, and the officer approached him and fired a fourth shot into his chest, killing him.

This report is incredibly disturbing IMO...Should the department be disbanded and started back up from the ground up?

New Mexico has terrible gang issues. It is one scary place. No, it should not be disbanded. It should be given a medal and encouraged to keep it up until illegal aliens, gangs and blatant disregard for the law is cleaned up. Once that is established, we can worry about abuses.

Agree with the gang issues, disagree with not worrying about abuses before the problems are resolved.

How about the police department obey the laws that they are enforcing? Since 2010 the APD has cost the taxpayers $23 million in police misconduct lawsuits.

I guess there just a little jumpy after all the Heisenberg problems.

There does seem to be some pretty disturbing stuff, but I don't get why the one about the kid fleeing and getting shot is one of them. If you run from police bad things will happen.

I think when there have been as many incidents as there have been over the last several years everything gets magnified. There have certainly been several cases of misconduct by the department and the public is fed up.

You don't think an officer walking up to a wounded individual, who is laying on the ground after one gunshot, and firing a kill shot to his chest is disturbing?

If he thought he had a handgun then no. The kid already was running from police which means to me anything is ok. Was it bad judgement? Heck yeah. But I can see why he did it. All I am saying is don't run for the cops.

But you can also see that with 25 fatal shootings of citizens by officers in the past 4 years why the citizens would be up in arms--especially with all of the lawsuits lost by the police and the DOJ condemnation of their actions, right?

The guy was laying on his back on the ground and he walked up and ended him. How can anyone say that's acceptable?

Not planning a vacation to New Mexico anytime soon!
