I'm a little out of my depth on this one, but at least from what I understand about Texas law, here's what I think.

 

The 5th Amendment is designed to protect against self-incrimination. If prosectors grant you immunity for anything you testify to, then there's no "incrimination", and you can be compelled or be jailed and held in contempt of court until you agree to testify.

 

In Texas, there are two types of 'immunity', transactional immunity and 'use and derivative use' immunity. Transactional immunity is broader and more preferred. It's likely what people think of when they think of 'immunity'. Use and derivative use immunity is more complicated and, in an oversimplified way, means that they will not be punished for anything they testify about unless it can be substantiated by an independent source (difficult because an independent source means no 'fruit of the poisonous tree').

 

That's my understanding of the Constitutional privilege against self-incrimination as relates to testimony in front of a grand jury in Texas.

 

I don't really know how testimony in a Congressional hearing differs though.
