CBS Sports: Reds' ace Mat Latos is expected to start throwing in 10 days after having surgery to repair a torn left meniscus on Friday, the team announced. That timetable seems pretty optimistic. He suffered the knee injury when he slipped off a mound earlier this week.

Votto had a meniscus repair where as Latos had a partial meniscetomy which is much less invasive. Different situations...

This ^^ Note: The following is based on the assumption it was a medial meniscus tear and not a lateral meniscus tear. The meniscetomy is much easier to come back from because it is only 3 small holes in the knee for the scopes and since they removed the injured part of the meniscus, there is nothing to heal. In contrast, when a repair is done the meniscus, sutures inside the knee, and all that fun stuff have to heal which makes it a longer recovery. And since I'm already typing the biggest thing that dictates whether the injured part of the meniscus is repaired or removed is where it is located. If it is on the outside part of the meniscus it is removed as there is no blood flow to it for it to heal. If it is on the inside, they typically repair it or go into a 'wait and see' approach since it has blood flow. My right meniscus ended up healing on it's own because the tear was on the inside. Part of my left meniscus had to be removed because the tear was on the outside.
February 19, 201412 yr I saw on the news tonight that Latos was throwing for 10 minutes. That's 5 days earlier than the doctors expected. Good news!
