Trinity 47 Lafayette 43

Final... thankfully. That was a slog.

Lafayette had their chances, two critical turnovers down the stretch.

Spalding with 17 & 7; Jackson Davis with 6 points & 7 boards. Per Mike Fields.

Great work by Getslow on providing updates while wearing a tie.

Four years as a tie-wearing student at Trinity prepared me for a life of wearing fancy clothes to trick people into thinking I know what I'm doing.

I hope the Courier-Journal has the real numbers on turnovers in tomorrow's edition because it felt like A LOT.

Trinity played smothering defense, especially under the basket by Spalding and Owens. That's what really saved them through the long droughts of not being able to score in any way, shape or form.

So be it. Onward and upward: Trinity will play Fairdale in the 6:00 pm quarterfinal on Saturday.

Lafayette will play Elizabethtown in the 6:00 pm consolation bracket game.

No doubt about it. Trinity was all over Davis and so that bore at least some of the responsibility for the first one. But that second one was just brutal, stepping out of bounds trying to set up a shot. Lafayette was definitely in with a chance right up until those two bad possessions in the final minute.

I have the box score in front of me and Spalding finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 blocks, though i know he had north of 4 blocks.

Davis finished with 6 points, 8 rebounds on 2 for 7 shooting.

He never could get into a rhythm at all.

Spalding's length makes it tough for nearly everyone to get into a rhythm. It's really impressive because Davis is 6'8 and struggled with Spalding's length.

According to Jason Frakes in the C-J this morning, Trinity and Lafayette combined for 35 turnovers. Yeah. It felt like even more.

Trinity shot 34 percent from the floor while Lafayette shot 31 percent.

Here's to saying that if this game was played again in February or March when both teams are clicking, it'd be a good one that's much less sloppy.

I was checking Trinity's roster and they have only 2 seniors-----Craig Owens and Tre Ivory. I think the less experienced players will definitely improve on the turnovers as the season progresses.

I agree. Stafford will get better about protecting the ball and making better passing decisions as the year goes on. He had a bit of a rough game at times. But he's got the talent to put it all together.

And if the Trinity defense keeps clamping down like it did last night, they're going to be right in there with anybody even if they aren't shooting well.
