1A Playoffs - With Fairview's Exit

Featured Replies

Who is 1-3 in the Fairview district?

1. Raceland, 2. Fairview, 3. Paintsville, 4. Nicholas County.

So, if that tie breaker ends the way it is now, here is how Region 4 playoffs will look

Nicholas County

@ Pikeville

Allen Central

-- BYE

Paintsville

@ South Floyd

Phelps

@ Raceland

That's indeed how it turned out to be.

KHSAA Got it right. The kid did not play during the district games so those games stand as is, therefore Paintsville and Nicholas are the 3 and 4 seed respectfully. That is where they finished.
You are correct, Fairview did beat those teams in competition without the ineligible player. The rational side of me, however, would argue that since they are not eligible for post season play, then they should not be awarded a seeding in their district at all. Based on that, I would argue that the reasonable thing to do would be to move Paintsville and Nicholas County up to the 2nd and 3rd seeds respectively and have no 4th place finisher.

Perhaps, as you say, the KHSAA "got it right" by the letter of the law, and perhaps not. I am going to always err on the side of caution when it comes to kids and in my opinion they missed an opportunity to "make it better" with their decision. Adjusting those seeds would have made the playoffs more equitable for every team in that region with the exception of Raceland and Phelps who would still play each other in round 1 regardless.

I commend the KHSAA for acting swiftly and dispensing their justice timely so that the playoffs would not be tainted. Based upon my limited knowledge, I think they made a good ruling in this case and agree with 90% of the way they handled the case and the punishment handed down. This one issue is pretty minor in the big picture and it is the only thing I think they could have improved upon.

That being said, in regards to the district seeding only, it seems to me that in their haste to act quickly they have thrown the baby out with the bath water.

I'm not so sure I agree Watusi and here is why: The KHSAA doesn't want to give anyone an unfair advantage. Just like Fairview had an unfair advantage by using ineligible players, giving a team that is likely to be in the Regional Finals (Pikeville) a bye in the first round would give them an unfair advantage. Now, some may argue that Allen Central is getting an unfair advantage, but in reality, no one is going to pick Allen Central to be in the Regional Finals. They may surprise someone, but they are not getting a pass to the Finals.
