I'm definitely a casual football fan, and have only been to one or two games that weren't my own schools. The handful that I went to were to watch some college friend's former high school play in the State Championship game and to see a close friend coach while I was in on break. With that said, if I were still in Kentucky, I think I'd attend a showcase event at Commonwealth.

 

Think about how many casual UK fans would come in to see Barker and Elam play if Conner and John Hardin were matched up and there were some more games that were draws like a Highlands vs. Trinity finale with Caldwell County vs. Madison Southern and Boyle County vs. Lexington Catholic or Henry Clay on the undercard.

 

If you were overly worried about the environment being too dead, would your view change if all the fans were forced to sit on one side of the field or if some type of arrangement was worked out like seating for the Sweet 16 where each school was able to have a cheering section during their game only? If it's too quiet, maybe let fans bring in artificial noise makers.

 

The point of the game for me, and maybe it's just being selfish as a UK fan, would be to get potential recruits on campus and to build excitement around the UK program. I think this is something Louisville has had an advantage in recently that UK could capitalize on if it were done right. If nothing else, maybe some type of involvement with a showcase event at one of the city schools.

With the top-notch agriculture program that they have at UK, I don't see this happening any time soon.

 

My understanding is the SEC frowns upon artificial turf in general fortheir football palaces. Kentucky will never agree to host 6 games in two days on their natural playing surface.

Never thought of that, but you could be right about the SEC. I know Ole Miss has turf and Vanderbilt might. I can't think of any others that have it.

Back in the 70's all the state championship games were at commonwealth, I was there to watch Lloyd beat Shelby county in 76. Of course there were only 4 classes back in the day.

Vandy plays on turf now. Arkansas and Missouri do as well.

1976 was the only year the state finals were played at Commonwealth Stadium. They were played at EKU in 1973, 74, 77, and 78. Western Kentucky hosted in 1975. Prior to 1973, the A and AA championships were at Stoll Field at UK for all but one season. The AAA championship was always played in Louisville, either at Manual Stadium (1959-63) or Cardinal Stadium (1964-74).

I seem to remember going to EKU to watch the Birds play
