Law enforcement sources in Boxford and North Andover told the Valley Patriot that social media posts show other students at the underage drinking party had posted on social media sites calling Cox a “liar” for claiming she was not at the underage drinking party when it was raided by police.

 

Cox told the media through her attorney that she was only at the party to give her friend a ride home, because her friend was too drunk to drive. Parents of children at the drinking party posted on the WGBH Boston blog, stating that all students at the party were driven home by parents, none were driven home by students and that Erin was at the party for a long time prior to the arrival of police. Also posted on the WGBH blog was a posting by one of Cox’s family members asking that people not give donations to the legal defense fund set up for the student after the story went national last week.

 

Sources in North Andover say that donations already given to Cox are being returned.

 

Erin Cox is being charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol and is being arraigned at Lawrence District court today at 9AM.

 

Earlier this month, school officials in North Andover cleared Erin Cox of having been drinking at the underage party, however, the rules for college athletes governed by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules were cited by High School Principal Scuzzarella when she suspended Cox from the Volleyball team for five games and stripped away her captaincy for being present at the party.

 

Superintendent Hutchinson said that there is no “zero tolerance policy” and that Erin’s suspension was the full discretion of High School Principal Scuzzarella.

 

“Social media posts by other minors at the party were very reveling,” a North Andover Police Officer told the Valley Patriot Monday, asking that his name not be used.

Before I jump on the bandwagon, I need to know the answer to one question. How long was the girl at the party?

 

Why do I need to know that? If she is hanging at the party for an hour, then she isn't just giving a drunk friend a ride and she did violate the zero tolerance rule. If she was there 15 minutes or less, then I am on the "administrators with no common sense" train.

To be fair, the original story says that: "Erin was cleared by police, who agreed she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol."

So she was originally cleared by police then other students said she was there and now is being charged? I'm confused as to this whole situation.

The newspaper has retracted it's story now calling her a liar.

Is zero tolerance not going into a resturant where they serve alcohol?

 

It would be if they served alcohol to minors. I am not in favor of zero tolerance at all. Don't get me wrong. I believe it is a scapegoat to rid administrators of any accountability, but a stated earlier, I would like to know exactly how long she was at the party and when she received the call from her friend. I would say if her friend called for a ride then 15 minutes or less to get out of there was sufficient. If she stayed an hour, then she had put herself into a position where she was no longer a ride home, but a partier as well. Sad, but as the saying goes, lay down with dogs, get up with fleas.
