Dear Coaches with Powerhouse Teams

True but there is a thing about taking unneeded risks. What happens if some 16 year old kid reaches a breaking point he normally wouldn't and takes a cheap shot? Yeah those things could always happen but you can do things to put the percentages more in your favor.
If you don't want your 16 year old taking unneeded risks, don't let him play football. He can stay home and play Xbox on the couch. However, he may end up with carpel tunnel (sp?) . Whether it is a blowout game or a nail biter, it only takes one play that can end a players season. Unfortunately we are unable to foresee those moments.

I'm talking as a coach. Heck if I could I would ban 4 wheeler use and all types of stuff from my players because they do some stupid stuff. As a coach I can do things that would lower the percentages of my players getting hurt. Still does happen. If the game is in hand I don't need to leave starters in to pad stats or to make sure everyone knows how over matched their opponent is.

For years on here Matnney ( I don't know the guy or have every watched his teams) has been blasted for doing things to pad his players stats. Also I don't see it as fair to compare getting run off the court in basketball to wait people are talking about in this thread. The dog references are pretty poor too. In some of these cases the poodle had no choice. It was forced to be placed in the fighting ring with the pit bull.

Also why restrict this to just powerhouse teams?

We would rather be referred to as German Shepherds sir and not Pit Bulls...

Pit Bulls are illegal and dangerous and German Shepherds are what they are, its just not fair to call our coaches or boys something they are not...:thumb:

I would respond to the pit bull remark in full, but then we would add 15 pages; But theres nothing wrong with being a pit.

The difference between myself and Coach Matney is that all I would do is allow my starters to keep playing. I'm not going to onside kick it so I can keep my offense on the field to pad stats and I'm not going to make a kid run backwards so another kid can pad his stats or set a record. I'd simply play the game the same way at 56-3 that I would at 0-0. For whatever reason people act like that is a bad thing. I don't feel like it is.

I used basketball because I didn't play football but participating in a basketball game and losing 88-14 is the same thing to me.

I restricted it to powerhouse teams because when Russellville beat Logan County 69-0 not one word was said. BG scored 22 more points that Russellville did against the same team and it's an issue. Nevermind BG is arguably the best team in the state. Highlands wants to run its 2 minute offense at the end of the first half but they are up 42-0 so it's an issue that they called timeout. How dare they call timeout in a game. They can do that in practice against themselves and have better competition. Are you kidding me? Why simulate a game situation in practice when you are in a game? Is it me restricting it to powerhouse schools or is it everyone else mad at the powerhouse schools trying to get better despite the fact that they have district opponents they are forced to play? Why are the powerhouse schools the only ones criticized?

Sure isn't. I purposely didn't use Pit Bulls because they already ave an unfair stigma and a trained German Sheperd could do the same amount of damage in the same hands of an irresponsible owner.

Exactly but most people are ignorant on the matter and only know what they see.

Yeah, yeah, and if you cut the coconuts off that German Shepherd then he takes the place of the French Poodle...

Cmon fellas, ole Sweep is with you on this one...

I agree you don't change who you are as a team. If you throw the ball as a team then or you blitz as a defense then by all means do what what you do. Do it with your frosh and jv players. Leaving in your starting qb or rb or whoever when up by 4-5 scores is taking an unneeded risk among other things.

The onside kicking while way up isn't really any different. Maybe that HC wants to "work on" his onside kick in live game because it's better than doing it in practice. Heck he could even say that if he doesn't recover it he is giving the other team a short field. Or he could just say if you can't stop it then it's not my fault you are that over matched. That is pretty much what one is advocating by saying keep your starters in so they can throw 10 tds or get 500 yds rec in a game.

I've never knocked HHS, BG, Trinity or any other school. If a score gets out of hand it happens. I don't have a problem with that. I wouldn't expect a team to play any less hard or to play outside their system. Leaving kids in to put up huge numbers because you can I do have an issue with.

Fair enough. I can roll with that. :thumb:

Coaches make decions all the time about what is and is not a risk worth taking with key players and it has nothing to do with the alternative being playing video games.
