Last I saw Hayes had around 280 yards and 8 touchdowns in one half of play last night.

Mr. Football is a popularity contest and isn't based strictly on results.

I was told from a very good source that each voter has their own criteria when it comes to voting.

His team's lack of success will hurt him but his numbers are sick. His numbers are also a product of his team not blowing anyone out and him playing all 4 quarters.

 

True, but his teams also aren't better than most anyone they play. So it's not like he has an all star line up he's playing behind. A lot of what he does, he does on his own. He's it. Teams key on him and he still does what he does. If he actually played on a good team and still played all the game, his numbers would be unchartable.

Maybe, maybe not. If he was on a good team he wouldn't be relied upon as much as he is with West Jessamine.

I was talking to some I respect "in the biz" about voting for Mr Football.

 

I fully expect this vote to come down to two players.

 

Barker and Houliston.

 

There's no question who the better QB is when it comes to how they can perform in college. Not close IMO. However, if your vote is how they produce at the high school level and on the field then Houliston will get your vote. As this voter said , if Houliston puts up 40+ TDs and 1 or 2 picks it's going to be hard not to vote for him even though he knows that DB is the better overall QB.

 

As I told him it's like how you define "MVP." Is it "best player on best team" or just simply "best player?"

 

Dale will get (and is getting) the word out about Houliston. HHS' long run will then allow for huge stats. That might be enough.

You can't ignore a players actual skills. Do those skills always equate to 40 TDs? No. Variables involved.

 

If I'm voting I would consider many factors including the program itself. I'd think "what would they do if they switched teams?" Would having 8 to 9 really good receivers make one look better if he had them? DH would get a boost because of the schedule he faces though. I can make arguments all day for both.

 

If it's best skill player (it really is) then it's an easy vote for me (and that's partially being biased and more just being able to judge).

No doubt. I wish there was some written rules or criteria down for them to follow though. Too many unknown variables goes into voting. If Barker finishes 50/50 IMO that has to be taken into account when voting. If every voter has their own criteria then someone like Houliston can have a spectacular senior season and win the award. To me that's not fair to the kid who has been one of the best quarterbacks in the state in the last 10 years. If there isn't any criteria set then it's the wild wild west and anything goes for any reason.

Looking ahead I see some stat builders over the next two weeks for Barker followed by two teams that have low ppg avg. against. Houlliston has a likely stat builder followed by Elder and a Warren Central team that is averaging 7 ppg allowed over their last four games. Houlliston could also end the year against Johnson Central, Boyle Co, & Collins. All of whom have given up 90 or fewer points on the season to date. Though it is more likely that Houlliston enjoys a longer playoff run he will have to do it against some of the states best defenses. If he plays that schedule and continues to put up these crazy numbers he is the man.

That goes back to the basic argument of is the award for career achievement or for this season. That criteria to is not defined. Though it may not be fair that one player may have been one of the best ever over the three year career, the other sat behind two different first team all state qb's. should he be penalized for having waited his turn, then outperforming everyone else in his lone season. Also, many of those who vote attend the state finals. Not being there, performing well, or poorly in the final often has a huge impact on the voting.

 

I also wish there was at least a loose set of guidelines. Though that may take away some of our ability to debate the issue.
