Question: When is the "DEAD" period ?

I also know that coaches are not allowed to be in ATTENDANCE unless their child is participating.

...and if in attendance, the coach "can't" offer instruction to any other player, including their own....no coaching or instruction can be offered.

Thanks for the addition. Very true.

Was it last year or the previous in which the state baseball champs wanted to host end of the year banquet during this time and was not allowed.

The dead period is the dead period. NOTHING is to go on that involves the school. NOTHING.

I think it is good to have a dead period, but I don't think it is safe to have it so close to football season. lets let a kids sit at home in the AC for two and a half weeks and then start 2 a days in the heat. Not smart why dont we have it right when each school ends.

I posted something CYNICALLY about basketball on this earlier, but I don't want to diminish what is actually a GREAT point OldOneTechnique has brought up!!!

Air Conditioning, TV, Nintendo, the Internet -- basically, all factors that lead to kids (and NFL players too, by the way) staying INDOORS and in COOL temps more during the summer is, in my opinion, the MAIN REASON for the increase in heat-related deaths in the last 20 years.

(Notice, we train NOWHERE NEARLY as hard as Bear Bryant, Charlie Bradshaw, or probably your own HS football coach used to train their guys in the summer and they had many, MANY fewer heat-related incidents back then. The difference is NOT when you start full-pads practice...it's the kids NOT being out in the heat as much as possible leading up to when practice starts.)

In this way, I'm afraid the TIMING of the Dead Period (which is actually a VERY GOOD THING in its essence) could actually end up being a CONTRIBUTING FACTOR in some of these problems.

I know it's probably not feasible (though, considering what it might PREVENT, I would think it SHOULD be), but I'd LOVE to see some "controlled study" done with schools all across the state to measure "heat stress" on players on July 15th for kids where the dead period comes EARLIER in the summer compared to places where it comes when it does now.

For that reason, though I don't do anything "organized" with our kids during the Dead Period (I actually encourage them to go away on FAMILY vacations during that time), but I STRONGLY encourage them to get OUTSIDE EVERY SINGLE DAY during those two weeks and do SOMETHING active and strenuous so when they come back to us and we're running and lifting them HARD the 2nd week of July, we're not dealing with a kid used to only 68-degree environments for the previous 2 weeks.

But, the CYNICAL part of me would say I think I know the reason it is when it is: :jump:

(and I'm not saying it's BAD to think in terms of helping a sport other than my own; but NOT if it's at the expense of other kids' health)

What do you think about the post I made? You had said no, but I believe it would in the regards I mentioned.

I meant no as in athletes could still participate in the activities mentioned but the restrictions you brought up are valid.
