Is what Voice of Reason said correct? Does Raceland have to beat Coal Grove, Ohio by two touchdowns to be considered a state contender? Or, does beating Coal Grove just prove that Raceland may be the team to beat?

We have enough game evidence to get a feel for Coal Grove. They are in one of Ohio's smaller divisions. They have been playing Ohio schools of similar size and there isn't anything on their game resume that makes me feel like they are a team to be feared. Beechwood beat a D3 Goshen Ohio team 40-0 in 3 quarters in a scrimmage. On Maxpreps Goshen is 2-1 and ranked higher than Coal Grove. Yes, it was a scrimmage. Yes, comparing scores proves very little, especially when one of the scores is from a scrimmage. But ... a 2 TD+ win for Raceland is necessary if they consider themselves a contender.

Come on VOR, a scrimmage. What was Goshen working on? Where they looking at their two's to get a feel for who could play? Were they working on a part of their game that needs work? Where they wanting to get some players on film to look at?

 

To put Maynard's comment in perspective, he is 6'6" and played on a line in high school that probably averaged 6'5" 280 lbs. For him to make that comment shocked me. In fact, when I heard it, my mouth was probably gaped open.

 

What if Raceland wins against Ironton Ohio in week 10. What does that say? They are Division 4.

Why is it "necessary"? This is not the BCS where you have to build up points to get into the title picture. The only thing that matters is the "W"...plain and simple. The season's not over if the Rams win by less than (2) TD's. Most people already have their minds made up as to weather they think Raceland's a contender or not, and I don't think one game's point spread is going to change that.

I remember NewCath entered the 1A playoffs as a 3 seed that lost to Beechwood and were 5-5. They came to our field in the Regional Championship in 2006 after defeating both schools that were ahead of them from their own District ( including B'wood) and beat us with a strong second half. If they listened to this type of reasoning, they wouldn't have even played in the playoffs, they would have just mailed it in. They went on to win the 2006 1A State Championship.

My comments relate more to the rankings and opinions and how I view things at this point in time. We make judgments about teams every week based on what they do on the field. I looked up Coal Grove and their opponents and who they all have played and I think Raceland wins easy. If they don't, it raises questions for me about how good they are. Raceland can change that opinion next week.

:idunno:Raceland would "HAVE TO" beat Coal Grove if Coal Grove were in KY. and in the 1A Playoffs/ State A Championship game and or a Raceland opponent in any of those. Last time I checked Coal Gove was in Ohio (and maybe a couple at Fairview :sssh:)

Beating this very big, very good Coal Grove team does not have a thing to do with Raceland being considered anything other than playing the toughest schedule they can to prepare for the KY. 1A Playoffs.

Now, does Raceland plan on and believe they can beat Coal Grove ? Absolutely !

Just food for thought, Coal Grove played Wheelersburg Ohio pretty close, Wheelersburge destroyed Ironton Ohio. Wheelersburg is consistently a good team.

I may be way off on this, but here is my thinking on this one.

 

I believe everyone affiliated with C.G.D.B. thinks they are going to win this one hands down. I believe no matter how much the coaching staff stresses to the players , that this is going to be a big game deep down inside they feel this is a win.

 

Now I think the Rams will win this one and the more I think about it I can see it being 14 points or more.

 

I do believe somewhere there is some doubt on the behalf of some Rams fans and maybe somewhere deep down inside the players might have that doubt.

 

As others have stated history does state as much.

 

I think if the Rams (after talking to some fans) can work the outside with their speed this is gong to open up the middle. I also believe #1 can have his best game to date against this defense.

 

#5 also could put up huge passing stats, with those short passes and the Y.A.C. totals.

 

But for all of this to happen the O-Line needs to come out on the first series and knock out some teeth. No playing soft or taking plays off. Go out and prove you are the better line and then it will show you are the better team.

I agree with most of what you say NCF. The Raceland fans expect to win, there is cautious speculations on the Rams part. The Raceland players expect to win, we have been cautioning them about this game, but they think they have the better team.

 

Coal Grove does lack speed, and you are right that our passing game should be the difference. 1 Conner Messer should have a big game, 5 Adam Elkins should pass for well over 100 yards in our balanced attack. Raceland's line does have to dominate, Coal Grove has a large OL/DL, our line has to set the tone early.
