900 seats closed off in Putnam Stadium

Engineering report reveals further structural problems with the bleachers installed in 1937

The Independent

ASHLAND — Anybody wanting a seat for the Raceland-Ashland game on Friday night in Putnam Stadium, better get there early — and not just because of the rivalry.

Putnam Stadium will have 900 fewer seats this season after structural concerns were raised from an engineering report at Monday night’s Ashland Board of Education meeting.

The 76-year-old stadium continues to show significant wear and deterioration of concrete.

Temporary fencing will be erected from the 25-yard line to the end zone — both home and visitor side — on the open side of the field.

Superintendent Steve Gilmore, right, and Maintenance Supervisor Joe Fraley look over some of the crumbling base of the bleachers in Putnam Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Doze it and start over. It's a yellow jacket infested heap at this point. The playing surface is great, the rest is poop.

I hate to say it, but you are correct. But, in their defense, that was the plan prior to this season, but the bleacher quote came in way over what was expected. I'd say after this season there will be a new look.

Sounds like the game needs to be moved to Raceland, of course I'm a bit biased.

The irony is that Ashland will not play Raceland at Raceland due to subpar facilities and too few bleachers.......

I would never agree to playing all my games against one team at their place(Unless I was getting a great deal on the gate and concession along with parking)

Hopefully this does not take away from the game and those who are or wanted to go.

We have a pretty good deal.......

Let's just say, it's a deal we have a hard time refusing.

How many places you go to a game that they charge for parking, Im curious. Ive been to a few.

Zero.

Just got to hoof it from a side street in the neighborhood at Ashland. I know Ashlanders feel that's part of the allure and mystique, but for visitors it's a pain in the butt. But most of our venues are similar here. Parking overflows to where ever.

None, that's studip!!!!

On the surface I agree, however the 3 times I have had to pay to park, its has been no more than $2.00, and the money was going to support one of the school clubs, or thats at least what I was told.

The one things I have always been disappointed in at Raceland is the actual playing surface. They have decent everything else, nice new scoreboard, new press box things like that, I never have understood why they have not tried to improve the field. It may be the worst in the area that goes along with a pretty nice rest of the place. If they would fix that part up it would be a great overall place to play a game.
