St. Xavier Insider - Week One

Featured Replies

Lets begin by saying St. Xavier has that first victory under their belt by beating a senior laden ballard team. Watching the game one would concede that this team isn't "the top team in the state". But with new coaches realistically they're not expected to be in mid season form in the season opener.

Game review:

Offense and defense both have a ways to go before this team can claim another state title. Defense needs to work on their pass coverages and assignments. Last Friday vs ballard the tigers got torched through the air for 366 yards and two tds. This is cause to worry because that isn't the best qb nor wide receivers the tigers will face all year. On the same token, we shouldn't worry because although the tiger d did a lot of bending it never really broke. They only gave up 14 points in 4 quarters of play. Once the bruins reached the red zone it was tough to pass the ball, evidenced by dekota jone's 27 yard int return. The bruins had a tough night running the ball. 20 carries for -9 yards. The run d is a major strength of this team and if the pass d can get up to speed this defense has the potential to be scary.

The offense is in the same boat; The run is a major strength while the pass is a big question mark. The tigers only attempted 7 passes Friday night and if I can recall completed 3 of those, one being for a td. When the tigers did pass the ball, the qb and receivers looked out of sync, balls being under thrown, tipped or, just bad balls. Luckily the tigers have the "three headed monster" to carry the offense until the passing situation is sorted out. The tigers rushed for 310 yards collectively with 244 of those coming in the second half. Walker and Percell both posted 100 yard games, and Davis added to the scoring total.

Looking ahead to this weeks game, the tigers are facing a pass heavy team that features a good quarterback. Although the tigers are currently struggling to defend the pass, the lex Cath signal caller will have trouble finding time to throw the ball. Lex cath's lack of size in the trenches should make for a long night. On offense the tigers may not feature the three headed monster.:sssh:.

Stay tuned to find out.

Good report!

Hopefully, the Tigers defense is not like the Buccaneers of last season. Best run defease in the league, but ranked last in pass defense.

Hope not.

That win puts Coach W ahead of Mike Glaser's pace. Glaser lost his first game as Tiger head coach to Southern way back when.

A 6-2 lead over Ballard at halftime made me think it was a soccer game... but the final spread was more like we all thought. Still a lot of yards racked up by Ballard. This week again the team will not be challenged much. It's just hard to tell how good the Tigers are until they play somebody. I'm hoping for at least 10 passes this week. Is that too much to ask?

Totally irrelevant to St. X today, but man, Southern High had some really good teams in the '70s and '80s.

Although it was just one week, Special Teams seemed to have dropped off significantly. That was one that was guaranteed with a Glaser coached Tiger team is a sound special team unit. Often overlooked, but is still one of the main 3 phases of the game that St. X consistently won, especially against Trinity. Seemed as though it was not focused on in preparation for Ballard. Hope they can make some changes to enhance that portion of the game!
