Beechwood Open Gym

Featured Replies

Stopped by Beechwood tonight and saw some pretty good basketball. Kids from Covcath, Holmes, Dixie, and Beechwood all there. Teams consisted of the following:

Beechwood kids (sorry I'm not too familiar with their names.)

Covcath team- Ruthsatz, Mark Schult, Schumate, Tobler, and Liam Rabe (Dixie)

Holmes team- Bolden, Housely, Chames, Hill, and Pangallo (Newcath)

Other team- Scotty Bibbins, Markel McClendon, Ethan Snapp, and two other older kids, I believe.

I'll post video tomorrow.

Nice line-ups, how did Pangallo do with the Holmes kid??? Pangallo & Bolden on the same team....scary. Give us a breakdown of who looked good.

Sorry to get off topic, but are the Holmes starting 5 coming up to NewCath tomorrow?

Not to stray further off topic -- and I defer to Walter on this -- but I do not believe Holmes has set their starting 5 yet.

Good point, how about "projected" starting 5?

Correct...obviously Bolden, McClendon, Housely, HIll, and Chames seem like the most logical, but Arnold has started in place of HIll over the summer and Coach Booher has went with some other 4 guard lineups with Chames at the 5.

As for how each looked....

Covcath

Nick Ruthsatz- made everyone around him better. Had a lot of assists down low and played solid defense in all games I watched, which was surprising considering it was basically a pick up game. Showed some DEEP range and also had some nice moves going to the basket. Easily one of the top 3 talents in the region.

Mark Schult- Not sure if it something he has been working on or always had it, but he showed a nice stroke from outside tonight, hitting several "3's" (they didn't play on the main court but would've been 3's if only playing one game at a time) and also making some mid range jumpers. Love his motor and how hard he plays. Very positive kid. Was a little overmatched against the duo of Chames and HIll, as both would go over him for rebounds, but what he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for with determination. Had several easy baskets just from hustling and out working the opposition.

Matt Schumate- I really like this kid and think he can step in and be the same type of player that Pauly was last year. He was automatic from mid range and finished around the rim well. I also liked his intensity on defense. Covcath fans will be pleasantly surprised with his progression from last season. Looks to have added some size and strength.

Liam Rabe (Dixie)- Liam was a little zoned out tonight but still played well, IMO. Showed a nice jumper that I know he has been working on with Brad Redford over the summer and handled the pressure of Pangallo.Bolden/McClendon well. Also had a few really nice takes to the bucket.

Ethan Snapp (Newport)- Ethan picked his spots here and there but was constantly going hard. Love how easily this kid scores. Solid mid range game, doesn't miss the easy stuff, and if left open will knock down the 3. I also liked the strength he showed when attacking the rim. Needs to get a little more aggressive with the ball but handles it well when in one on one situations.

Zack Pangallo- He looked REALLY GOOD tonight at both ends. Not sure if it was playing with the Holmes kids or what but he was really aggressive at both ends and had several nice oop passes that led to a dunk. MId range/outside shot was there today and he looked a lot smoother than when I saw him last week. As he continues to get back in basketball mode full time, he is only going to become an even bigger problem for teams. Had some really nice takes to the rim off the dribble tonight that had his teammates going "ooohhhhh." LB13 will really like what he sees when I post the video tomororw.

Holmes:

Markel McClendon- Markel continued to impress me with his defense. Had several steals against Pangallo and Ruthsatz but it was his improved jumper that really showed me he has been working this summer. Shots he's passed up previously when I saw him this summer, he was taking and knocking down from outside. If he can consistently do that, he will be tough to handle. He was Holmes best player at times over the summer and an improved jump shot to go with his quickness gives him a lot of weapons to use.

Armani Housely- Showed a solid mid range and outside game and attacked the boards hard. Was surprisingly pretty solid handling the ball as well.

Marcus HIll- Rebounded VERY WELL but also missed some easy shots here and there. Had a couple dunks and blocked shots all night. WIll be more of a defensive presence than anything for Holmes.

James Bolden- Not much to say about him, honestly. Everyone knows what to expect from him and he didn't disappoint. BIggest thing I saw tonight though was how quick he was end to end after a made basket. Took Scotty Bibbins to school several times when matched up. Also had a nice oop dunk against the Covcath team.

Quinton Chames- Animal around the rim...plain and simple. He was dunking anything and everything tonight. Had to have had atleast 10 dunks. At one point, Goetz had to tell him to stop dunking because they were using the side rims. He was the most impressive player tonight, IMO. Showed a solid jumper from outside, as well.

Newcath open gym is for Newcath kids only tomorrow....but I believe Holmes "starting 5" and Dixie kids Rabe, Hatton, Isbel, Niehaus, and Bolin will be at Covcath open gym Wed.

Is it just me or does anyone find it overkill that we are now getting game reports, player reviews and videos for open gyms?

I love the coverage by Walter and they hype that he is creating for his cronies. But I don't think NBA players get this type of coverage in the off season.

I have to admit it does make me crave for the season to actually start. When the games actually do matter.

Nope, not overkill. All information is good information. I love what Walter does and all the info he gets out there. Yes, he gets a little slanted at times but we all do that for the teams and players we like. Your last two sentences are all the support Walter needs to know he is doing good work with his reporting.

Trust me, I realize it's open gym guys. Not everyone gets to see a lot of these kids over the summer though so I do this just to try to keep people around NKY updated on the progress that these young men are making. It's also nice to see some video and notice them doing different things that maybe they didn't do as well last season.

In all honesty, it is a great way for me to get my basketball fix in. As much as I love football, nothing compares to hoops season. :lol2:

Just heard tonight that senior Logan Cummins from Grant County tore his ACL during this open gym and he is done for the season.

What was he doing all the way up at Beechwood? Don't remember seeing him here that week.

This is way off topic but Walter, I want to invite you to an exciting Elite Basketball Camp for the girls of NKY. We would love for you to join us and get your hoops fix by watching some of the Elite talent this weekend! It is a NCAA Certified 3 day camp and the players that were invited were selected by a panel of coaches from 8th, 9th and 10th regions.

Camp begins this evening at 6:00 and at 6:30 a parent/coaches/general public meeting to provide a high level of overview of NCAA rules and regulations and what parents and players can do to prepare for getting to the next level lead by a former D1 Coach. Sat: 9-6 with 5v5 games beginning at 11:00 and Sun 9-4 with an All-Star game starting at 2:30. Again, would love to have you join in the 1st NKY Rising Star Elite HS Camp. Location for camp is 25 Cavalier Blvd (rt next to Boone Co HS)

More details are posted under the Girls Basketball forum.

Hope you can make it!
