August 10, 201313 yr How can we tell his ability to judge talent by his time as an assistant at IU? Look at the roster when he was there. Kids that couldn't play and the ones that could outside of Gordon were a hot mess...
August 10, 201313 yr Look at the roster when he was there. Kids that couldn't play and the ones that could outside of Gordon were a hot mess... That statement says one of all of the following: Head coach has no say in who gets offers Kids pick SOLELY based on the asst coach If a talented prospect chose to go elsewhere it means the coaches can't evaluate talent
August 10, 201313 yr I checked DD's history. He was assistant coach for 10 years. IU won 73% of their games. He is one of 3 coaches in BG history to post 4 18-win seasons. So he took a school that doesn't win much and won more than they had in the past. Can't evaluate talent OR is one heckuva coach to overcome his ability to evaluate?

August 11, 201313 yr Pretty good coach. Never questioned that side... Hold on now. You implied that he wasn't a good talent evaluator ("look at the roster when he was there - kids that couldn't play...) when he was an assistant. Numbers don't seem to support that. So I'm asking how you can judge him as an evaluator.

Numbers don't seem to support that. So I'm asking how you can judge him as an evaluator. Go look at any of his bios and tell me where it says in any of them "Dakich recruited (fill in the blank) during his time at Indiana". The purpose of those things is to fluff up what a guy has done, and he sure gets credit for "coached six All-Americans and three national Player of the Year candidates, including 1993 Player of the Year Calbert Cheaney, worked with three Big Ten MVPs, and academically, graduated every four-year player to go through the program (Dakich was the academic monitor on the IU basketball staff his last seven years). " Dan Dakich Profile - IUHOOSIERS.COM - Indiana University Athletics Not one mention in the entire bio of any big time players he landed while on staff. They accidentally forgot to mention it? Sure. And to go back to the coaching side, you really want to go to bat for him at BG when he didn't make the NCAA Tournament in 10 years, won the MAC regular season once and obviously never won the conference tournament? The more I look, his best attribute was graduating players. Maybe he can be next in line at Xavier...

I've already asked(and haven't gotten an answer) how an assistant coach gets the blame/credit for the talent that comes to a school. You said he wasn't a strong evaluator based somehow on his time as an assistant. I'm simply trying to determine how we judge that. Are you saying that the best evaluator of talent in the country is Orlando Antigua?

August 11, 201313 yr I'm saying he didn't recruit one relevant player in time as an assistant at IU. If you can prove me wrong, please do so... We agree that there's a difference between recognizing talent (original point you made was that it wasn't a strength of his) and getting said talent to come to the school, right? Assuming we agree I'll ask again how you are so sure that he's not a strong evaluator of talent.
August 11, 201313 yr Well on another note, this could be a brutal recruiting year for IU. Could have got Lyle, Lyles, Blackmon and Pinson. So far none, and only have a shot at Blackmon anymore... Tom Crean's really messing it up with this class.
August 11, 201313 yr Plays a lot like Doron Lamb. Can really fill it up from distance... Sign me up for hoping UK lands him then.
